Below on June 22nd, I showed the front and back sides of a
\nT-shirt I dyed for a friend.
\nShe wanted me to paint a message on it, and here it is!
\nShe wanted “Article 9,” the pacifist article of Japan’s Constitution.
\nShe hopes to retain it and often joins pro-Article 9 marches and street actions.<\/p>\n

\nBefore calling her or me “leftist” or throwing insults and\/or stones
\nat me or her, please keep in mind that this is a highly important issue
\nthat takes a lot of calm and constructive discussions.<\/p>\n

For instance, over here in Japan, today there are many anti-Article 9
\narguments that say the existing constitution was “pushed” to Japan
\nby the General Headquarters shortly after the end of WWII.<\/p>\n

That’s NOT the case.
\nThe plain fact is that on January 24, 1946, Kijuro Shidehara, then Prime Minister of Japan, met with Douglas MacArthur and proposed a pacifist constitution.
\nSo, Article 9 was established upon the Japanese intention.
\nIf you read Japanese, you can easily find this fact in Japanese Wikipedia
\n(https:\/\/ja.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%E5%B9%A3%E5%8E%9F%E5%96%9C%E9%87%8D%E9%83%8E<\/a>)
\nThe English Wikipedia page on Shidehara also has some mentions to the pacifist
\nintention:\u00a0\u00a0https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kij%C5%ABr%C5%8D_Shidehara<\/a><\/p>\n

Also, lately, a calligraphy work made by the former prime minister was discovered,
\nwith a note saying “This is a note to Article 9.” Again, if you read Japanese,
\nvisit\u00a0https:\/\/mainichi.jp\/articles\/20190502\/k00\/00m\/040\/132000c<\/a><\/p>\n

A crucial issue requires calm, serious, and constructive discussions, and
\nthey have to stand on facts, not on mass media rumors.<\/p>\n

So, what is my own opinion on the pacifist article??
\nWell, already back in 1978, at a Diet Session, then Prime Minister Takeo Fukuda said,
\nconcerning Japan’s (future) possession of nuclear weapons,
\nsomething like: “Our interpretation of Article 9 does not prohibit our
\nnation from having nuclear weapons in all cases. Japan could possess a
\nnecessary minimum amount of such weapons for the sake of self-defense.
\nNote, however, that Japan stands firmly on its Three Non-Nuclear Principles.”
\nNow, if an “interpretation” like this has been around over the last 41 years
\nat least, what sense is there in amending Article 9???<\/p>\n
