“Kal Mosa”, Stage 1 \/ \u30b9\u30c6\u30fc\u30b81<\/p><\/div>\n

\uff08\u65e5\u672c\u8a9e\u306f\u82f1\u8a9e\u306e\u4e0b\u306b\uff09<\/p>\n

Below on October 19, I showed you just the priming (undercoating) of this
\nnew painting. Here is its Stage 1. The work continues.<\/p>\n

The source of inspiration
\nIt is inspired by Deuteronomy 8:3 of the Torah — “Humans shall not live
\nby bread alone but by ‘every thing\/word that proceeds from’ the mouth
\nof YHWH”.
\nCommonly, this is translated like “— by ‘every word that proceeds
\nfrom’ the mouth of YHWH”. Yet the portion within the single quotation
\nmarks is in the original Hebrew actually “kal mosa” — “every (thing) that
\nproceeds from”. So, the Hebrew does not say, at least explicitly, “word”.
\nLiterally, “kal mosa” means “everything that proceeds from —“.<\/p>\n

The Septuagint has “\u03b5\u03c0\u03b9 \u03c0\u03b1\u03bd\u03c4\u03b9 \u03c1\u03b7\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b9 \u03c4\u03c9 —” (by every word\/utterance that —)
\nMaybe, this Septuagint translation affected most of the later translations.<\/p>\n

As you probably have experienced, when this “kal mosa” is rendered
\n“every word”, people often take is as “God’s teachings, commandments, etc.”
\nand think of a two-storied human existence: “material = body and
\nmoral, existential = word”. Then, there often are some people that complain,
\n“That’s a lovely teaching, but after all we cannot survive without bread.”<\/p>\n

Yet if “kal mosa” is taken as “everything that proceeds from —“,
\nwhat are the things that come out of God’s mouth??
\nSince this “mouth of God” is itself a metaphor modeled after
\nhuman organs, let’s think of what comes out of our “mouth” —
\nDon’t say “burps and yawns”, please!
\nYes, words, teachings, commandments, etc. do come from human mouths
\nas well. Yet what is the thing that comes out of a human mouth
\nmost frequently?? Obviously, breath!!<\/p>\n

So, if we take “kal mosa” as something that includes breaths as well,
\nthe divine breath is what makes every living creature exist and live.
\nOnce the breath of God leaves a person, no bread can ever help him\/her.<\/p>\n

Seen this way, Deuteronomy 8:3 is certainly not a goodie-clean teaching,
\nbut a statement of an obvious truth.<\/p>\n

Well, if you’d rather see the painting as a “queer flower” rather than
\nsomething explained above, you have all the right to do so.<\/p>\n
