一部諸国の政府が戦争の準備を進めているなか、私は平和を求めて “saying my beads” （ロザリオで祈る）を続けております。
Saying my beads —
Might look like a “miserable” painting, but actually it’s an experiment — with a type of oil pastel called “crepus” in Japan. Here, it is usually used at kindergartens, just like Crayola is in the US.
An average Crepus is around 1cm (0.4”) in thickness, so the medium is unfit for drawing precise details. Thus, the hand is ghostly and I had to use a color pencil to draw the eyelashes. Anyone can see Crepus is not the right medium for precise or detailed drawing. Maybe this is why it is generally considered to be “for kindergarteners.”
Yet please note Crepus, once applied to paper, can be slightly extendible with fingertips. This has resulted in the color mixes that I think are quite fanciful. This aspect of Crepus is certainly usable.
Painters, if you like the color mixing effect, try using Crepus where appropriate. And be sure to wash your fingers after that!!
なんやら、悲惨な絵に見えるかも。でも実はこれ、実験なのです。クレパスでどこまで描けるのか、という実験。単に幼稚園の画材と思われていますが、私はクレパスの使えるところを引き出したいのですね。
平均的なクレパスは太さが1㎝前後ありますから、細部を正確に描くのは無理ですね。そのため、下の例でも手はなんやらお化けになってます。まつ毛は、ここだけ色鉛筆で描かないといけませんでした。細密描写や精確な描画には、確かに不適です。だから、「幼稚園向け」とされてきたのかもしれませんね。
でも、紙に塗った後で、指で少しだけ伸ばせるという特性にご注意を。このおかげで、一種の混色ができます。その効果がなかなか素晴らしいと、私は思います。この特性は、いかして使うべきですね。
絵描きの皆様、この一種の混色効果がお好きなら、一度クレパスを試してみてくださいな。そして、使用後はしっかり手を洗いましょう …
Experimenting with “Crepus”
I’ve been occupied with some rush writing jobs last ten days — now, I’m back.
T-shirts saying “NO WAR” have been around for several decades now, and I’m adding my versions to that long history. Before calling them “cliches,” let’s see it straight — the very existence of wars makes the message necessary!! Thus, such clothes should be around, until we get rid of this tragedy called war!
Below, I’m still working on dyeing a plain white T-shirt. After the dyeing is done, I’ll put the message on it.
この10日ほど、ずっと大急ぎのライティングの仕事でふさがってました。そいつらを終わらせて、戻ってきました。
NO WARと書いたTシャツは、もう何十年も出回ってますよね。そこにあえて、私なりのバージョンを加えようとしています。「ありふれている」という前に、現実を直視しましょう。いつまでたっても戦争がなくならないから、こうしたメッセージになるわけです！ 人類が戦争をなくす、その日まで、こうしたメッセージ衣類も消えるわけにいかないのです。
下でご覧のように、まず真っ白なTシャツを染める作業をしています。染めができたら、そこにメッセージを入れます。

Pastel does not work well on croquis paper —
クロッキー用紙に描くと、パステルの効果が充分に出ない
I turned another 20-minute croquis from August 2 into a full pastel painting, because I did not like the effects the croquis paper created with pastel yesterday. So, I tried another work on the same croquis paper.
8月2日の20分クロッキーをもう1つ、パステルの絵画にしてみました。なぜか？昨日の同様のパステル画で、使ったクロッキー用紙でのパステルの効果が気に入らなかったからですね。
そこで、もう1作、同じクロッキー用紙にパステルで描いてみたのです。

As you see below, the result was a no-no. Pastel requires paper that is more solid, usually thicker. This holds true especially when you use a lot of color gradations with pastel, like I do.
Though this particular croquis paper I used this time was 90kg in weight and rather expensive, and though the manufacturer claims it works well with pastel as well, actually pastel requires more than that.
ご覧のとおり、やはりこのクロッキー用紙はパステルには向かないようです。パステルには、もっとしっかりした、多くの場合には分厚い用紙が適切ですね。特に、私のように色のグラデーションを多用する絵描きの場合には、そうです。
実は、今回使ったクロッキー用紙は90kgあり、メーカーはパステルにも相性が良いと主張しているのですが、やはりパステルはそれ以上の紙を要求するようです。

On Sunday, August 2, I joined in a human model drawing session in my neighborhood. There, the model took six poses in all, each 20 minutes. Shown below is one of the six croquis I made there. Coarse and awful, right??
8月2日の日曜日、近所で人体クロッキーのセッションがあったので、参加しました。底ではモデルさんが6つのポーズをとり、いずれも1ポーズ20分ずつでした。
下は、その6枚のクロッキーの1つです。荒っぽくて、意味不明ですよね？？

With only 20 minutes available, I just concentrated on making a sketch of what the model and her pose gave me as an inspiration, which I meant to draw with way more time later. Now, the full pastel painting of the croquis above is done! You see what a difference 140 minutes can make —- By the way, actually, the model was wearing a short hair do, as shown in the 20-minute croquis. I turned it into a longer hair style, since, to me, long hair looks well with “mystery” —- short hair looks very modern and practical, to my eyes.
20分しかなかったので、とにかくモデルさんとそのポーズから受けたインスピレーションを、急いで描きとめることに集中したのですね。後日、それをゆっくり描こうと。
で、その「後日ゆっくり描いた」パステル画が、できました！ ご覧のとおり、140分の違いで、どれだけの差が生じることか …
それと、元のモデルさんのヘアースタイルは、20分の方にあるようにショートだったのですが、それを長く変えました。私にはなぜか、ロングの方が「神秘」にあっているように思えるのですね。ショートヘアーというのは、どこか現代的で実用的なものに思えるのです。

I found a human model drawing session in my neighborhood, Nakano, Tokyo.
Some 25 artists got together around a single model, who took six poses, only 20 minutes each. So, it’s a practice of “croquis” (quick drawing).
下のクロッキーでは、モデルさんを未知の空間に「浮かせて」います。

At this moment, 7am JST, it’s 28C (82.4F) with the humidity at 94% here in Tokyo. And the daily H today is predicted to reach somewhere around 37C (98.6F).
Honestly, in the desert-like climate of LA, Calif, I found 98.6F is not deadly. Yet you can easily imagine it can be quite deadly with Tokyo’s humidity. I’m afraid I will hear many ambulance sirens today — carrying heat stroke patients into hospital. Please pray for Tokyoites’ safety today.
I’ve always been a lover of days with H below 2oC (68F). Here is a quick sketch of the Lake of the Isle, MN, US, I made in the air below the freezing point (0C, 32F)

たった今、午前7時の時点で、東京は気温28C、湿度94％でした。今日の最高気温は、37C前後の予想です。
私自身の体験では、砂漠のような気候のロサンジェルスだと、37Cでも死にそうにはなりません。しかし東京の今日の湿度ですと、本当に危険だということは、容易にご理解いただけるでしょう。おそらく今日は、救急車のサイレンが各地で聞こえることでしょう。熱中症の患者さんを病院に運ぶ救急車ですね。みなさん、ご注意くださるとともに、お祈りくださいな。
実は私自身は、最高気温が20C未満の日が好きなんです。

First, you might think it’s a “Shinto” building. (top)
Actually, as you see in the bottom image, it’s a Roman Catholic church.
I think it’s a good example of architectural localization.
