Heeday’s philosophy in writing : I do not necessarily believe in “customers first!”

I know many creative agencies, copywriters, etc. claiming “customers first,” especially in the current worldwide economic crisis. Well, in a customer-oriented kind of business like, say, consumer PC vending, I would also go for “customer satisfaction” above anything else. Yet does this principle hold in copywriting?
Obviously, a consumer PC is meant to satisfy its user. Then, who are the “users” of copy-written text? Of course, there are some cases when a client is also the “user,” as in the case a translated document is used inside the client’s organization. In many cases, however, the text created is meant for “users” outside the client’s organization.

For instance, a consumer PC is, again, meant for its user, who usually pays for it. Yet ads for the PC are not meant to attract the organization who pays for the ads --- the client of the advertising --- but to please and attract the targeted consumers. The same holds for the user manual accompanying the PC. Though it is financed by the PC vendor, the manual must be “nice” (easy to understand) and thus pleasing to the end users, not the vendor!

Absurdly obvious!? Yet---
So far, I’ve been saying things obviously obvious. Yet in my 18 years of experience (as of Sept. 2009) as a copywriter, I do have seen some clients who want their ads’ text to suit their own preferences, not the targeted consumers’. I once refused a job offer from a certain software provider, who insisted on end user manuals loaded with technical terms, and the application I was asked to write those manuals for was meant for general consumers, not software engineers!

Where does the money ultimately come from?
I believe text created for, say, general consumers must be nice with, easy to understand to, and attractive to general consumers, rather than to the client of that text writing. In short, as far as copywriting is concerned, I believe in “readers first,” not “clients first.” And as long as the client’s money comes from some of the “readers” (those consumers who buy that PC advertised with that copywriting, for instance), this is the right attitude in such writing.
Needless to say, creating text that is “nice” with the targeted readers always involves some guesswork. Yet this is where much of the fun of writing lies, as well!
Well, this might not be a good way for me to survive the current global economic crisis, but it is a fundamental principle I have learned in my 18 years of experience in writing. So, if you agree with me, why not try ?a n a s † a s i a ?

もし私の姿勢に納得していただけるのでしたら、 a n a s † a s i a のライティングをお試しください!
