Making an imaginary landscape is not an easy job.
Below on December 24, I showed an esquis based on a sketch made at the site,
yet I worked further on it to obtain this.
I think now I can start working on the actual paperboard.

Now, just below on Dec. 31, I showed you two croquis experiments
done while I was still trying to capture the model’s atmosphere at a croquis session.

Here is the final pose of the day. By the time of this pose, I learned the atmosphere
this particular model carried and some movements her poses implied.

As you see, this final pose was static — with her face looking down right on the floor.
This could easily result in a dark, ennui croquis, but I wanted to bring some light in it.

So, here it is.

みなさま、良い2019年を！

すぐ下の12月31日、クロッキーの実験を2枚紹介しました。
これらはまだ、私がクロッキー会の会場でモデルさんの雰囲気を把握しようと
していた間に描いたものです。

本日のクロッキーは、この日の最後のポーズ。
この時点までに、このモデルさんの雰囲気や、彼女のポーズが
醸し出す動きなどを把握できていました。

ご覧のとおり、このポーズは静的で、顔をフロアーの上、下向きにしていますよね。
だから、暗くアンニュイな感じのクロッキーにしやすいのですが、
私としてはそこに明るい光を取り入れたかったのですね。

Usually, an artist does not show “miserable croquis” like these in public, but I am an exceptional artist that certainly shows his/her process of experimentations.

Two 20-min croquis from a session of Dec. 16 —

I often end up like this with the first pose —
I need to learn the atmosphere the model carries, before
I can go all out drawing her/him.

I experimented with the model’s atmosphere and the movement her pose implied.

Then, I reached somewhere with the final pose, which I’ll show in my next post.

大抵のアーティストは、こんな「みじめなクロッキー」を人目にさらすことはしません。
でも私は例外的で、実験のプロセスを平気で人前に出す場合があります。

最初のポーズはこんなひどいものになることが、私の場合、多いのです。
モデルさんが持っている雰囲気などを把握しないと、本気で描いていけないのですね。

モデルさんの雰囲気と、ポーズが醸し出していた運動とに着目して、
実験したものです。

そして、最後のポーズでそれなりの結論を出せました。

As you have noticed, recently I’ve been painting landscapes and human figures,
but architecture has been something missing.
In fact, I haven’t drawn architecture lately, so “just for practice” I drew a
mansion in Tokyo.
Lucky, I found this mansion — Tokyo doesn’t have many classical works of
architecture, actually.

お気づきのとおり、このところ私は主に風景や人体を描いていて、
建築物を扱っておりません。
実際、最近は建築物を描いておりません。そこで、「単なる練習」として
この、東京にある邸宅を描きました。
この邸宅を見つけたのは、ラッキーでした。実際のところ、東京には
あまり古典的な建築物は多くありません。

I decided to paint the Greek word “ελπis” (“elpis”, hope) and some forthysia flowers (whose flower language is “hope, anticipation.”)

下の12月12日の時点では、この染めたシャツに何をペイントするか、決めていませんでした。
結局、”ελπis” (“elpis”、希望) という言葉とレンギョウの花（花言葉は「希望、期待」）とを
描くことにしました。

ウラ面ができるのを、お待ちくださいな。

Thanks for prayers, my fever is gone, and I’m up and well again!

Now, way below on November 26 (Please scroll down and click “Older posts”
on the bottom), I posted an unintelligible quick & rough sketch.
Here is an imagination developed on it, NOT another unintelligibility
from another place.

I made the Nov. 26 sketch NOT to paint the scene itself, but to
create an imaginary landscape. Here is just a beginning of the
creation of a fictional landscape.

おかげさまで、熱が下がり、元気が戻りました。

で、ずっと下の11月26日（スクロールダウンして、最下部の “Older posts”
をクリック）に、訳の分からないラフなスケッチを紹介しました。
ここに紹介しているのは、またどこかの風景のワケの分からない
スケッチではなくて、11月26日のスケッチから発展した想像上の風景です。
ここにあるのは、その空想の風景の序端。

もともと11月26日のスケッチは、その風景自体を描きたいわけじゃなくて、
そこから何らかの想像上の風景を創り出したかったのですね。
ここにあるのは、その始まり。

I don’t know what went wrong, but I am currently running a high fever.
So, please wait until I get well and make my next post!

何がいけなかったのかは不明なのですが、現在、高い熱が出ています。
ですから、回復して次の投稿ができるまで、しばらくお待ちくださいな。

You know, at many croquis sessions, the artists are not supposed to ask the model to
“take a —- pose”. The model usually decides what pose he/she takes.
And at my croquis sessions, some 20 artists surround the model.
Quite common, right?

So, there arises a common problem —imagine the model is lying on the modeling
platform, with her feet facing right at you!!
You see, you are simply unlucky. It’s not your fault, but
if you draw the model “literally” this way, you will end up with an
shoe ad saying “A human needs shoes”, or something like that.

So, I act like nuts in a case like that — I just stand on a chair and
do the drawing with my left hand holding my croquis book and
the right one working with a pencil. This way, you can have a better angle to see the model
Sounds tough to do?
Well, I don’t experience so much difficulty doing that. Maybe you can try,
if you are an “unlucky” artist at a croquis session!

クロッキー会では多くの場合、一人のモデルさんの周囲を、例えば20名ほどの
アーティストたちが囲みます。だから、アーティストの方からモデルさんに
「次は～～～のぽーすをお願い」とは、言えないのですね。
大抵は、モデルさんがポーズを決めます。
私が参加しているクロッキー会も、そうしたよくあるパターンです。

そのため、ある種の問題もよく発生します。ええ、モデルさんが台の上で寝転ぶ
ポーズで、あなたの方に足を向けたら？
あなたには、何の責任もありません。単なるアンラッキーですよね。
でも、そのまま「文字通りに」描いてしまうと、アンヨばっかり前面に出た
奇妙なクロッキーになってしまい、まるでシューズの広告のような ・・・・
「人間には、シューズが必要です」と言いたいのか？みたいな。。

そこで、こういう場合、私は奇妙な行動をします。
椅子の上に立って描くのですね。左手でクロッキーブックを持って、
右手で鉛筆を持って。そうすれば、モデルさんを見るに、ましなアングルが
得られるので。
難しそうに聞こえるかも。
でも、実際、私はまったく困難を感じません。
あなたもクロッキー会で「不運に見舞われた」場合には、
試してみると良いかも。
