Just a 100-min exercise of drawing a model dozing off / ウトウトしているモデルさんを描く、１００分デッサン会にて
On October 14, I joined a drawing session — 100 minutes of the same model, same pose.
As the artists began their work, I found the model drowsing and resisting
Mr. Sandman. Her posture kept “swaying” with her eyes closed, reopened, and closed again —
I talked to the floor manager and said, “Shall I get her a cup of coffee??”
Looks like this utterance of mine woke her up. Following that, her eyes and body
stayed fine and alert.
Some of the artists present asked her to precisely resume the initial posture
before she dozed off.
I didn’t care. “Well, it’s part of a painter’s skills to process changes in the model’s
posture,” I said.
So, in the wax pastel (crayon) painting I’ve posted here, the model
actually had her eyes more widely open. Yet I found her drowse
interesting, so I gave this painting the “sleepy eyes.”
I found interesting the marginal state between “here” and “out there” —
Also, I extended the model’s upper half of the body, to create a sense of
“going somewhere”.

１０月１４日、１００分デッサン会に行ってきました。１００分間、同じモデルさん、
同じポーズです。
画家たちが描画を始めたところ、どうもモデルさんが睡魔と闘って、
ウトウトしてらっしゃいしました。体がフラフラと揺れ、両目が閉じたり開いたり ・・・
監督担当者に私が話しかけ、「コーヒーでも買ってきましょうか？」と
申し上げました。それを聞いてモデルさんの目が覚めたようで、
それ以降はしっかりとモデリングをしてらっしゃいました。
その場の絵描きさんたちの中には、モデルさんに最初のポーズを正確に復元するよう
求める人たちも、いらっしゃいました。
私は、気にしません。「モデルさんの動きを処理するのも、絵描きのスキルの一部ですよ」
などと申し上げました。
そんなわけで、ここにお見せしているワックスパステル（クレヨン）の絵ですが、
実際にはモデルさんの両眼はしっかりと開いていました。
でもモデルさんのウトウトを私は面白いと思ったので、この絵では
「眠そうな目」にしました。「ここ」と「あちら」の間にある状態のように
思えて。
モデルさんの上半身を実際より長く伸ばしたのも、「どこかに移っていきそうな
感じ」を出すためですね。
