“Lost” flip side / 「失われた」ウラ面

Below on February 25th, I showed a cartoon to be featured on a no-nuke flyer / flier (either will do).
Now, I thought the flyer was to consist of two sides,
the front in 4C and the flip side monochrome.

Now, they changed it to a “4C front side only” flyer.
So, here I show you the “lost” flip side.
I have yet to receive the body text, so it is still “Lorem ipsum dolor —.”

If you are interested in listening to Dr. Miranda and
happen to be in or around Sendai, Japan, this May 28th,
just go to Sendai Christ Church by 2 pm.
Admission free.

The church is located at
the “kasugacho” intersection, where “Jozenji” (定禅寺) and
“Bansui” (晩翠) avenues cross each other, some 440 yards (400m) west of the ”Kotodai Koen” subway station, Nanboku Line Subway.

下の2月25日、No Nuke講演会のチラシのウラ面に入れる予定だった
マンガを紹介しました。
で、私はそのチラシ、４C とモノクロの両面刷りと理解していたのですが、
「4C一面」ということに変更になりました。

そこで今日は、「失われた」ウラ面を紹介しておきますね。
ボディーのテキストはまだ私に届いていないので、
“Lorem ipsum dolor —” のままになってます。

ミランダ シュラーズ博士による、ドイツの脱原発に
関する講演です。
ご関心がおありで、この5月28日に仙台周辺にいらっしゃる方は、
午後2時までに仙台基督教会にまでお越しくださいな。

仙台基督教会の場所は
地下鉄南北線「勾当台公園」駅から西におよそ400m、

Fickle thoughts in 20 minutes / 気まぐれな想いを20分で

Another 20-min croquis from March 3.

As you can easily tell, this pose easily makes the viewer
think of some capricious thoughts.

So, in this croquis, I tried to make the model “lost in
fickle thoughts” — did I succeed??

20-min croquis / 20分クロッキー

So, today, March 3, I joined a croquis session again — as usual, 20 minutes x 6 poses.
Here is one from my six.

As you probably can tell easily, this pose, seen from my angle, creates the sense
of “looking beyond what is visible” — I tried to create that sense without any background.

Did I succeed??

今日、3月3日、またクロッキー会に行ってきました。いつもどおり、20分 X 6ポーズです。
その6枚から、1つです。

皆様もおそらくはお感じと思いますが、このポーズをこのアングルから見ると、
どこか「見えるものを越えて眺めている」ような感触がありますよね。
それで、一切の背景なしにその感触を描こうと努めたものです。

その感触が、出てますでしょうか？？

Nothing much —
As posted below, I am working on a flier / flyer for
a no-nuke open lecture scheduled for this May in
Sendai, Japan, as well as on
another handout related to it.

I have yet to receive the text content of that handout,
so I just entered “Lorem ipsum dolor —.”
I made some “rose decorations” for the handout.
Here are two of them.

何も大したもんじゃないです ・・・
下の投稿にあるように、この5月に仙台で行われる予定の

そのもう１つの印刷物のテキストをまだ私はいただいていないので、

nuclear power.

下で、あるチラシ用の背景として描いたイラストを紹介しました。
ドイツ政府が原発廃止を決めたことに関する公開講演会の
チラシですね。

今日は、その同じチラシのウラ面に入るマンガです。
もちろん、私が描いたもの。

近日中に、その暫定チラシの完成したものをお見せしますね。

To be the background of a flyer / チラシの背景になります

What!? Such a mediocre landscape —-
Well, it’s not a “standalone painting” but the background
to a flyer for an open lecture scheduled for this coming May in Sendai, Japan.

Some text is to come in,  especially in the top and bottom.
The lecturer has yet to send me a summary of her lecture,
so this is a preliminary version.

I’ll show you the preliminary version with all the text and illustrations,
when it is done.

なんとまあ、ありふれた風景画？
これは「独立した絵画」ではなくて、
今年の5月に仙台で行われる予定のオープン レクチャーの
ためのチラシの背景です。

この上にテキストが入ります。特に、上と下のスペースですね。
まだ、講師の方が私に講演要旨を送ってくださっていません。
なので、このチラシはまだ暫定版です。

暫定版にイラストやテキストを入れたら、またここで
紹介しますね。

These two 20-min croquis are from the same crosuis session held way back in December 2015. So, I used quite different styles for the same model.

Some people tell me that I do not hold on to the same drawing style, depending on the
motif, atmosphere, message, etc.
Here, let me explain why.

In the left croquis, this particular model’s leanness (a very lean body, indeed!) gave me
a wild imagination of overcongesstion pressing people into some “stick-like people.”
So, I drew this crazy imagination.

In the right one, luckily in a way, the lean model turned her back right at me —
as many of you know, a lean lady creates a very lovely waist curve in a pose like this.
So, here, I just made a plain, “conventional” croquis, in order to describe the
beauty of her waist curve. Then, I added in some random curves to create an impression that the model was looking out into some space, in the remaining minute or so.

I hope you see that I do not change my media / styles on a whim, but I think about what is the “beef” of that particular drawing / painting and change the styles/ media accordingly.

ともに２分クロッキーで、ずっと前、2015年12月のクロッキー会で描いたものです。つまり、同じモデルさんなのに、まったく異なるスタイルを用いたのですね。

モチーフや雰囲気、内容などに応じて、私はまったく違うスタイルを使うね、といわれる場合があります。
それはなぜなのか、今回は説明しましょう。

上の左側のクロッキーでは、このモデルさんの細さ（実に、痩せた方でした！）を見ているうちに、すし詰めのプレッシャーの中で棒のように痩せていく人々という、クレイジーな想像が生じたのですね。
その想像を描いたわけです。

右では、ある意味でラッキーなのですが、この痩せたモデルさんが背中を私に向けてくださいました。皆さんもご存知だと思いますが、痩せた女性がこのようなポーズをとると、腰の曲線がとてもきれいなのですね。
そこで、ここでは単純に「ありきたりな」クロッキーを描いて腰の曲線の美しさを捉えることにしました。1分ほど時間が余ったので、空間にランダムな曲線を描いて、モデルさんが何らかの空間を眺めているような感触を作りました。

私が気まぐれでスタイルや画材を変えているんじゃなくて、
その絵での「肝心なところ」を考えてスタイルや画材を選んでいること、
お分かりいただけましたでしょうか？

On February 11, I joined a drawing (not croquis) session. Here is what I made there.

I often show my 20-minute croquis here, and they are inevitably coarse and sketchy.
The Feb. 11 session, however, gave me 2 hours to work on a single pose.

The difference of 1 hr and 40 min made a “helluva lot” difference in the outcome,
as you see.
With this time given, I afforded to look at the model longer, who carried an atmosphere
of some contemplation. To me, it seemed like some discernment.
So, the background has “two lights” (Jack-o’-lanterns???), and the model is
facing the “right light.”

Now, my sketchbook has some bend, which made a photo warped, as shown below.
So, the image above is a scanned one.

2月11日、クロッキーではないデッサン会に参加しました。そこで描いたのが、上のデッサン。

ここでよく20分クロッキーをお見せしていますが、字間の関係で荒っぽいものになりますよね。
でも2月11日のデッサン会では、同じポーズに2時間かけることができました。

つまり１時間と40分の違いですが、それによってご覧のとおり「あまりにも」違う絵ができます。
2時間あると、モデルさんをゆっくり観察できるんですね。このモデルさん、どこか
思索的な雰囲気を醸し出してらっしゃいました。私にはそれが、何かの識別のように
思えました。
それで、背景に「2つの光」（鬼火？？）を描きました。モデルさんは、「正しい光」の方を
向いているというわけですね。

私のスケッチブックが少し湾曲していて、下の写真が歪んでしまいました。

Just a 20-min croquis from a Feb. 3 croquis session.

Seen from my angle, the model looked like thinking of something —
— maybe some sarcastic people say she’s thinking “Hey, did I lock my door?”
No matter what she was actually thinking of, her pose created some
nice meditative atmosphere.

In the 20 minutes, I tried to capture that atmosphere, with just a
box of 25 colors of crayon (wax pastel).

私がいた位置から見ると、このモデルさんは何か考え事をしているように見えました。
・・・ ことによると、口の悪い人なら、「あ、部屋の鍵かけたかしら？」とか言い出すのかも
しれませんが。
実際にモデルさんが何を思ってらっしゃったのかは知る由もありませんが、
このポーズは瞑想的な雰囲気を創り出していました。

そこで、20分でその雰囲気を捉えようとしたわけです。25色のクレヨン
（ワックスパステル）です。
