What can one do, with just
– a common writing pencil (HB),
– an eraser,
– a black ball-point pen, and
– a sheet of paper,
in just 20 minutes??
That’s what I experimented on November 23rd, at
another croquis session.
Here is one result.

Below on October 18, I posted Stage 2 of “Bed of Photons” restarted.
Here is Stage 3 — wait, where’s the difference!?
Actually, if you look at the real thing of it, you can easily tell I have added
some subtle shading to it in pale green.
The problem is that the scanner and the camera are unable to capture
all of the subtle shades — one major problem with those devices
that have yet to be solved!

下の10月18日、やり直したBed of Photonsのステージ2をお見せしました。
今日は、ステージ3 ・・・ って、どこが進んだの！？
実は、実物には淡いシェイドをペールグリーンで加えているんです。
問題は、そうした淡いシェイドを、スキャナーもカメラもうまくとらえてくれないこと。
昔から解消されていない、この種のデバイスの問題ですね。

As you see, with a 350mm x 250mm (13.8″ x 9.8″) croquis book,
I could do the whole thing in the 20 minutes.
This time, the model looked happy and less serious.

The no-nuke poster, finished / No Nukeポスター、完成
I used to take a 515mm x 364mm (20.3″ x 14.3″) croquis book to the 20 minutes x 6 poses croquis sessions.
On November 4, however, I had to cycle to church after my croquis session, so my croquis book had to be of a size my messenger bag can contain. So, I took a smaller one, 350mm x 250mm (13.8″ x 9.8″) with me.
You see, the sheet size seriously affects the croquis, whose work time is harshly limited.
With the larger book, I got the figure alone done in the 20 minutes of croquis drawing and had to add the background later.
With the smaller one, I did the whole thing below in 20 minutes.
I had some minutes to consider the model’s facial expression and the resulting atmosphere. Then I had another few minutes to paint the background accordingly.
IF you are a newbie to a croquis session, I suggest you consider well the croquis book’s size you take to the venue.

私は以前、クロッキー会には 515mm x 364mm のクロッキーブックを、20分X6ポーズのクロッキー会に持って行きました。
でも11月4日は、クロッキー会の後で自転車を飛ばして教会の礼拝に行くことになってました。そのため、私のメッセンジャーバッグに収まる大きさのクロッキーブックを持って行かないと。そこで、350mm x 250mmのものを持って出かけたのです。
ご覧のとおり、時間が限定されているクロッキーの場合には、紙のサイズは実に大きく影響しますね。
以前の大きなブックの場合、モデルさんだけを20分で描いて、バックは後で加えていました。
今度の小さいブックでは、20分ですべてを描けました。
モデルさんの表情とそれが醸し出す雰囲気を検討して、さらにそれに合わせた背景を描く数分間が、残されていたわけです。
はじめてクロッキー会に参加される方々には、持っていくクロッキーブックのサイズをよく検討されることをお勧めします。

What!?
Yeah, this is the final esquisse for a new painting I’m planning to make.
It’s titled “Un(re)productive” — straight response to a highly discriminatory remark made by a member of Japan’s House of Reps this last July.
The member, Ms. Sugita, called LGBTs “unproductive” and argued that the government should not spend tax money on their causes.
Well, Ms. Sugita, count me in the “unproductive” rank and file, since I’ve been single and have no child, though I’m not part of the LGBTs myself, and though I’ve been an honest, good taxpayer!!!
Some of my good friends are part of the LGBTs, and I’ve been getting along well with them with no problem — they are just “people”!!
I made and considered many other esquisses so far, actually, and
have decided to settle down with this.

一体、なんだ？
これは、新作絵画のためのエスキースです。つまり、これから描く絵画のラフスケッチ。
“Un(re)productive” というタイトルで、今年の7月にある国会議員がやらかした大変差別的な発言に対する反応です。
杉田さんというその議員さんはLGBTの皆さんを「非生産的」と呼び、政府は税金を彼らのために使うべきでない、と主張しておられます。
そうですか！ なら、私もその「非生産的な」有象無象の一人に入れてくださいね！私もずっと独り者で、子供がいないので！ 私自身はLGBTではないけど。私は正直に税金を納めてきているけど。
私の良い友人たちの中にはLGBTの人たちもいるんですけど、友人として付き合ってきた中で、何の問題もありません。彼らも要するに「ピープル」なんです。
この新作のため、他にもあれこれエスキースを検討したのですが、これに落ち着きました。

* Well, this is a scanned image of the real draft — the scanning has made
the lower horizontal bar’s green so bright the letters within it are illegible.
In the real draft, the green is much nicer and the letters are easy to read.
