Dyeing another shirt
This time, in place of “dripping” dyes over to the shirt (just like Jackson Pollock did to his canvases), I dipped the whole white shirt into a bucket of dye solution.

今回は、ジャクソン ポロックがカンヴァスでしていたような「ドリッピング」ではなく、
シャツ全体をバケツの中の染料液に沈めました。

So, you might think the shirt comes out of the bucket in solid black —
— well, dyeing is not that simple. And that’s why it is a lot of fun!

さて、バケツから出てきたシャツは、単純に真っ黒になっているとお考えかも。
でも、染めるとは、そう単純な作業ではありません。また、そこがオモロイのです！

So, in the coming days, I’ll add more dyes to it.
そんなわけで、今後さらに染めていきます。

Just another 20-min croquis, from March 11.
Once again, the “inspiring” effect comes from the empty space, into which the model seems to be looking.
Empty space does have something in it that stirs up our imaginations.

やはり、想像力を刺激する要素は、モデルさんが眺めている（ように見える）何もない空間ですね。
うつろな空間の中には、我々の想像を刺激する何かがあるわけです。

So, the back side of the dyed shirt — painting is done.
I decided to go with a plain, simple line drawing this time, since the dyeing result is, as you see, highly complex.

Way back on January 5, I was working on some “pictorial horizons” — then some other jobs were pushed to me, disabling me from  continuing the “horizon work.”
Now, I’ve resumed it.

I didn’t like the back of the dyed shirt shown below on February 13, after the dyes dried.
(Again, dyes change their hues significantly, as they dry.)

So, I applied a few more layers of dyes —-

下の2月13日で紹介した染めたシャツの裏ですが、気に入りませんでした。
やはり、染料は乾くと色合いが変わるのですが、その問題です。

そこで染料の層をもう少し加えました。
これで、ペインティングに進めます。

Another 20-min croquis from February 18 —
When I have 10 minutes or more for a single pose, I do not immediately start drawing when the “stopwatch” rings. I watch the model and his/her pose and let some images arise in myself. Then, I get down to the “pencil/chalk work.”

Thus, my hands and thought are at work simultaneously together.
The croquis, in such a case, turns out to be a sketch of the motif and an idea, rather than of just the motif.

When I drew this one, I only had some brownish and white chalks. So, this “croquis of an idea” consists of browns and white only. Yet I think I can develop it into a multi-colored painting —-

同じく2月18日のクロッキー会から。
1つのポーズで10分以上ある場合は、「ストップウォッチ」が鳴っても、ただちに描き始めません。
モデルさんを見つめ、そのポーズを読んで、自分の中に何らかのイメージが湧いてくるのを待ちます。それから、鉛筆やチョークでの作業が始まります。

そんな感じで、手と思考が同時に働いています。
そうした場合、クロッキーは単なるモティーフだけのスケッチではなく、モティーフとアイデアのスケッチになります。

下のクロッキーを描いたとき、手元に茶系と白のチョークしかありませんでした。そのため、この「アイデアのクロッキー」は茶色と白だけになっています。でも、多色の絵画に持って行けそうな ～～

I was not satisfied with what I had in the dyed shirt, showed on Feb. 7 below, so I have added another layer —
As I said before, dyes change their color hues significantly as they dry — requiring another layer often.

下の2月7日の「オモテ」面の染色、まだ気に入らなかったので、もう1層を加えました。
以前にも申しましたが、染料は乾くにつれて色合いがかなり変化してしまうので、「もう1層」を加えないといけなくなる場合が、よくあるのですね。

Layer 3, front / 第3層、オモテ

I joined another croquis session on February 18. As usual, 6 x 20-min poses.
The model was a lovely lady, with a really elegant body.

Probably, this qualifies as a perfect drawing model — to some artists.
Well, to me, I found her missing something. I want some “intentions” in poses.
For instance, suppose a drawing model is looking down, with her face buried in her hands. Maybe she wants to act out someone severely distressed, or a weeping person. I want such an intention — what the modeling body wants to say — in every pose. I hope I’m not “demanding.”

Maybe my senses failed to read her “intentions” on Feb. 18, yet anyway I did not see such an intention in that model.
So, I drew this 20-min croquis — I intentionally left the face and head empty. It creates the sense of some ennui mystery in the croquis, I hope.

2月18日も、クロッキー会に行ってきました。いつもどおり、20分 ｘ 6ポーズです。
モデルさんはとても可愛らしい方で、身体もとてもきれいでした。

一部のアーティストにとっては、モデルさんはそれで充分なのかも。
でも私としては、何か足らない感じがしました。私の場合、ポーズに「意図」を感じたいのですね。
たとえば、モデルさんが下を向いて顔が両手に埋もれているとしたら。泣いている人、何かひどい不幸にあった人を演じようとしているのかも ・・・ そんな「意図」をモデルさんの各ポーズに求めるのですね。「要求が多すぎる」でしょうか？

2月18日に、私がモデルさんのそうした意図を読み損ねたのかもしれませんが、とにかく私には「意図」が感じ取れなかったので、・・・
・・・ この20分クロッキーのような描き方をしたのですね。つまり、頭部を故意に空白にしました。これで、どこかアンニュイな謎という感じが、出ていると思います。

Hollowness in the lovely model — I might say / すてきなモデルさんの中に、潜む空白 ・・とでもいえばいいのか？

Well, I know it’s quite messy, but we painters do have such training as well —
to learn and represent how things look in quite a short time.

A famous quote from Eugene Delacroix goes: “If you are not skillful enough to sketch a man jumping out of a window in the time it takes him to fall from the fourth storey to the ground, you will never be able to produce great works.”

So, here are my “extremely quick” croquis — 15 seconds for each of the six poses above, and 30  for each of the three below.
Usually, we painters do not show such “speed training” croquis, so I think I’m giving you a rare experience here.

これは随分荒っぽいクロッキーですが、実は私たち絵描きは、こういう訓練もするのです。
物事がどう見えるのか、それをどう描くのか、極めて短い時間で学ぶために。

ユジェーヌ ドラクロアの有名な発言です： 「人が4階から地面へと落下する間に、その人をスケッチできるだけのスキルがなければ、優れた作品など決して描けはしない」

そんなわけで、下にあるのは私の「極端に短時間の」クロッキーです。
上の6ポーズはいずれも1つ15秒、下の3ポーズはいずれも1つ30秒です。
ほとんどの場合、絵描きはこうした「スピード訓練」で描いたものは、人に見せません。

しかし、皆様に「めったに見られないものを、見る」経験をしていただくのも良いかなと思ったわけですね。
