On February 4th, I joined in another croquis session. As usual, 20 minutes x 6 poses.
Shown below is one of the six.
Here, I made the “object”, the human model, rather ghostly, lacking in “3D-ness”, while the space around her vibrating with chalk strokes. The result, as you see, suggests the human is absorbed in some wild, complicated thoughts. “Empty space” can speak —

2月4日も、クロッキー会に行ってきました。いつもどおり、20分 x 6ポーズです。
その6ポーズの中から、1つを下に。
ここで私は「物体」つまりモデルさんの身体をややボヤけさせ、あまり立体感などないものに描いています。逆にその周囲の空間を、チョークのストロークでうごめかせています。その結果は、ご覧のとおり。人が何か、ワイルドでややこしい思考に没頭しているかのような感触を生み出しているはず。「何もない空間」が、ものを言う場合があり得ます。

I’ve added more layers of dyes to the shirt shown below on February 1, on the front side.
One problem about clothes dyeing is that the dyes’ hues, when they dry up, change — usually, turn paler. So, when they are dry, I have to see the hues and add some more dyes if they are too pale, and/or monotonous.

下の2月1日に染め始めたシャツのおもて面に、さらに染料の層を重ねました。
衣類を染める場合の問題の1つとして、染料が乾くと色が変わります。多くの場合は、色が淡くなるのですね。ですから、乾いてから色調を見直して、淡すぎたり単調過ぎたりしているなら、さらに染料を加えます。

Actually, she was just lying on the floor — yet I wanted to put her in a space of some movement, as you see. Why? She went through a lot of transitions, I believe, raising up her child/children fine.

1月21日、またクロッキー会がありました。いつもどおり、20分のポーズを6つ。
で、2017年12月に、クロッキー会の主催者に私が、何でモデルさんの多くが20代から30代の痩せた女性ばかりなのかと、尋ねたのですね。主催者は、誠実に応えてくれました。それには、お礼を申し上げます。1月21日のモデルさんは、40過ぎの方のようでした。
ご存じのように、多くの絵描きはできるだけ多様な身体を描いてみたいものなのです。スリムな若い人たちから、年上のぼってりした人たちまで。なのに、絵画用モデルのエージェンシーで登録しているモデルさんといえば、たいていは20代の女性です。いったい、なぜ？？
そのため、たとえば私は今までに、50人以上の人体を描いてきました。しかも、多くの国籍のモデルさんたちです。ところが、それなのに、40歳以上のモデルさんを描いたことは、一度もなかったのです。この1月21日までは。（モデル エージェンシーは、この辺をもっと考慮すべきですね）
で、この日の40過ぎのモデルさん、私にはとても勉強になりました。モデルさんのお腹のたるみが、肥満によるものじゃなくて、明らかに出産によるものでした。それは、乳首からも明らかでした。乳首の変形から、赤ちゃんに授乳してこられたのだろうと分かりました。
そうした「母なる偉大さ」に敬意を払いながら、20分クロッキーを描いていました。アート用モデルのエージェンシー各社も、多くのアーティストが同感であることを学んでほしいものです。

I joined another croquis session on January 21st. As always, 6 poses x 20 minutes.
Well, back in December 2017, I asked the organizer why we, the painters, usually have a model that is a slim woman in her 20s / 30s. Now, the organizer of the session has proved its sincerity, for which I’m very thankful — on Jan. 21, we had a model who seemed to be in her early 40s.
You know, many painters hope to draw bodies of many different kinds, from slim, young ones to chubby older ones. Still, many painting model agencies have mostly female models in their 20s. (Why!?) One result of this is that, while I have drawn more than 50 models of many different nationalities in all so far, most of them are women in their 20s. Until January 21st, I had never drawn anyone above 40 years in age! (Model agencies should know better —)
Now, I found this 40+ model very helpful. The slack in her tummy suggested she had a childbirth. This I could confirm, when I saw her tits — some deformities in them suggested she gave a lot of breastfeeding to her baby.
I drew her with a lot of respect to that. A mom is great! Art model agencies should learn that many artists share my respect to moms.

So far, with oil pastel, I’ve dealt with harsh realities like nuclear facing-off, fierce arguments, etc., making use of the medium’s coarseness and clumsiness.
Yet can I make something delicate and smooth with oil pastel??
So, here I go with another experiment — only just begun.

今まで、オイルパステルでは、私は核ミサイルでのにらみ合いとか、熾烈な口論とか、過酷な現実を描いてきました。オイルパステルという画材が、非常に荒っぽく、不器用な画材であることを利用したのですね。
けど、何かデリケートでスムーズなものを、オイルパステルで描けないものでしょうか？
というわけで、新たな実験を。始まったばかりです。

(Boy, didn’t I say male croquis models are precious here!?)
I don’t know whether the model is a boxer or a dancer, yet watching his muscles, I could easily tell he was into some form of athleticism. I wanted to bring up the “jumps, hops, punches, kicks, turns, etc.” he makes in his training. Having only 20 minutes, I chose to draw with coarse strokes.

やはり1月7日のクロッキー会から、同じ男性のモデルさんの別のポーズ。これも、20分です。
（以前にも申しましたように、男性のクロッキーモデルというのは、東京では貴重なので、・・・）
このモデルさん、ボクサーなのかダンサーなのかは私は存じませんが、彼の筋肉を見つめていると、何らかのアスリートであることは、確かだと思いました。それで、彼がトレーニングでやってらっしゃるはずの「飛んだり跳ねたり、パンチ、キック、ターン、などなど」を表したかったのですね。20分しかない中で、どうするのか？荒々しいストロークで描くことにしたわけです。

This was a good model — maybe a boxer??? — the built-up muscles on his little-fat body speak something in a coarse quick drawing like this.
