On April 23rd again, I joined a human model croquis (quick drawing) session.
The “20-min. croquis, Apr. 23” below is from there.
The other one below is from around two decades ago, it took 15 minutes.

At art shows, I’ve seen some (not many) people saying “nice” to drawings like the 15-min. one, and “why” to the other.

I tell you, the 20-min one takes more time and efforts than the 15-min one does. Why??
With a drawing like the 20-min one, the artist has to consider what atmosphere the model carries, how to render that atmosphere on the paper, and so on. Then, draw. All these in 20 minutes.
With the other one, all that the artist has to draw the model “as it is.”

Just like arrangement of a plain song, arranging a model visually takes a lot of thinking and work.

4月23日も、人体クロッキー（速写画）会に行ってきました。
下の「20分クロッキー、4月23日」が、そこで描いたものの1つです。
下のもう1つのクロッキーは、20年ほど以前のもので、15分クロッキーです。

展示会などでは、多くはいらっしゃいませんが、下の15分のような絵は理解できるが、20分の方になると「理解できない」と仰る方々も、いまだに少しいらっしゃいます。
下の20分のような場合、アーティストはモデルの醸し出す雰囲気などをよく読み、その雰囲気をどう紙の上で表すのか、その他の問題を考えないといけません。そして、描く。それらすべてを、20分で。
もう1つの15分のものでは、アーティストはモデルさんを「そのまま」描くだけです。

単純な曲を編曲するのと同様、視覚的にモデルさんをアレンジするには、いろいろ考えて作業しないといけないのですね。

Below, on April 6, I showed a work-in-progress in a new direction with oil pastel, — to take advantage of the medium’s clumsiness and coarseness.
Oil pastel is an effective medium when you depict some ugly, coarse sides of us, humans, or our society, I think.

Now, it is done.

下の4月6日に、オイルパステルでの新たな方向性による制作中の作品を公開しました。オイルパステルという画材は、大変不器用な画材で、荒々しい表現には向きますね。
そのため、我々人間や社会の醜悪な面を描くには適切な画材だと思うのです。

完成しました。

これはあくまでマーカー点描の実験ですので、非売品です。
描いた色がそのまま残るのか、退色するのか、様子を見ないといけませんので。

この記事は、下のポーズ 6のような絵をご覧になって、「なんだ、こりゃ？？」と仰る方々向けのものです。
少なくてもここ、東京で展覧会などやると、今もそういった方々がいらっしゃるからですね。

4月9日、また人体クロッキー（速写画）会に行ってきました。いつもどおり、20分ずつ6ポーズです。
その6ポーズのうちの3つを、ここに示します。いずれも20分クロッキーなので、極めてラフです。

2 –> 5 –> 6 という順序で作業を進めたことに、ご注意ください。つまり、「イージー ルッキング」から始めて、ポーズ6へと進んでいったわけですね。

なぜか？その日のモデルさんは、痩せた身体で、でも素敵な若い女性でした。で、どこか鋭い張りつめた雰囲気を醸し出してらっしゃったので、その雰囲気を描きたかったのです。単に身体の曲線など描くと、たいていの若い女性の身体には、「よくある」ものになってしまいます。

ポーズ2 の時点では、まだモデルさんの雰囲気を「読んで」いましたので、単純に身体を描いていました。雰囲気を読むにしたがって、より鋭い線に移行していったわけです。

この記事が、ある種の絵画を視るうえでの手助けになれば、幸いでございます。

This post is targeted at those who say, “Huh?? What?” at Pose 6 below.
Actually, at least here in Tokyo, I still find some people like that at some painting shows.

On April 9, I joined in another human model drawing session, where I drew six poses as usual, 20 minutes for each.
Out of the six, here are three, Poses 2, 5, and 6. Since they are all 20-minute croquis (quick drawings), they are quite coarse and rough.

Please note that I worked in the sequence of 2 –> 5 –> 6. So, I began with the “easy-looking” one, Pose 2, and proceeded to Pose 6.

Why?? The model of the day, a lovely, lean female, carried some quiet yet sharp and keen atmosphere around her. I wanted to depict that atmosphere, rather than, say, the curves of her body, which are after all common among many young females.

With Pose 2, I was still “reading” her atmosphere and simply described the model’s body. Then, as I read her atmosphere further, I moved on to sharper lines.

Before some of you wrongly think I like drawing young women without clothes —

Yesterday, on April 2nd, I joined in another human body drawing session, and the model was a young male, something hard to find here in Tokyo.
You know, most of us, painters, want to draw bodies of both males and females, young and old, of all the skin colors. You know, people of all those characteristics can appear in some paintings —

In reality, however, at least here in Tokyo, most of the nude models are young women.
It’s something out of my control, and I don’t even know why.
So, if you are not “a young woman” and want to pose as a model, just contact some model agencies for drawing sessions! There is good demand for such models, and the supply is small.

なにか、私が若い女性の裸体を描くのが好きなのだと、誤解をされる方がいらっしゃるかも。

昨日、4月2日、また人体クロッキー会に行ってきました。昨日のモデルさんは、若い男性。男性のヌードモデルさん、少なくてもここ東京では、見つけにくいのです。
ほんとのところ、たいていの絵描きは、老若男女、すべての肌の色、そう、いろんな人体を描きたいのです。絵画作品の中にどんな人体を登場させるか、分かったもんじゃないですからね。

ところが。現実には、少なくても東京では、人体デッサンのモデルさんは、たいてい若い女性です。これは私がコントロールできない問題で、なぜそんな現状があるのかさえ、私には分かりません。
ですから、「若い女性」以外の方で人体デッサンのモデルをやってみたい皆さん、ぜひ人体デッサン用のモデル エージェンシーにご登録なさってみてくださいな。需要はあるのに、供給がきわめて少ないのですから。
