Back in February, I saw many plum trees stripped of flowers and leaves and clad in white snow.
A snow-covered, withered tree transformed into a full blossom
is always a “sight” — so, I just began painting this “(February)
Plum in Ascension”.
Here is the initial pencil scratch on paper.
２月のこと、梅の木が何本も、花も葉もないのですが、
白い雪をまとっているのを見ました。
枯れたような木が雪に覆われていたはずなのに、満開へと変身して
行くのを見るのは、いつも「見もの」ですよね。
そこで、この “(February) Plum in Ascension” （（２月の）梅の昇天）
という作品を描き始めたのですね。

Nothing special. When I have some time, for instance when I’m
waiting for someone, I often do some basic drawing exercise.
Here, while I was waiting for someone, I made this sketch of a neighborhood school. (I carry my croquis book and some pencils
around when I go out.)
In other disciplines as well, an artist doesn’t leave basic
exercises behind. For instance, a singer never abandons
“messa di voce”, does (s)he?

なんと言うこともない、基礎練習です。時間ができたとき、
たとえば誰かを待っている間、こういう基礎描画練習を
やることが、よくあります。
上のスケッチも、人を待っていた間に近所の学校のチャペルを
描いたもの。（私は外出時に、クロッキーブックと鉛筆を
持ち歩いていますので）
絵画以外の諸分野でも、アーティストは基礎練習を忘れて
しまったりしないですよね。たとえば声楽家なら、
“messa di voce”をやめたりしないですよね？

Just begun (Stage 1)
As you know, 2D perspectives are all illusions on a plain.
You could just deny them outright and “go abstract”, if
you choose to.
Yet a painter could choose to make use of illusions too.
描き始め（ステージ１）。
ご存じの通り、２次元での遠近法とはすべて一種の錯覚です。
だから、錯覚をすべて否定して抽象へと向かうこともできます。
ですが、錯覚を利用するという選択もあります。

Most of us are subject to gravity, always.
Now, in the plain known as a painting,
gravity is supposed to work top to bottom.
Well? It’s just a plain, after all — which implies
that the “2D gravity” can sometimes work right to left.
Then, the horizon can “stand upright” —???
我々のほとんどは、絶えず重力に支配されてます。
ですが、絵画という平面では重力は上辺から下辺へと
作用しますよね。
でも、結局のところ、平面はあくまで平面です。
ならば、絵画平面での「2次元重力」は、
場合によっては右から左に働くことだって～～
そんなとき、地平線は縦にまっすぐ伸びるのかな？？
So, here’s the beginning (initial pencil scratch) of a
new painting, which tries to depict such a gravity error.
そんな「重力のエラー」を描こうとした、新作のための
最初の鉛筆スクラッチ。
