Way below on August 2, I abandoned a version of this made on poor-quality paper.
Here, I’ve started it over, on better-quality paper, with wax pastel. You see, the smoothness of colors is way better.
Why did it take so long to start this over?? Tokyo’s killing heat. It won’t let most people concentrate on anything.

ずっと下の８月２日、質の悪い紙に描いてしまったこの作品を、いったん廃棄しました。
ここで紹介しているのは、質の良い紙で描きなおした描き始め。ワックスパステルです。
ご覧のとおり、色のスムーズさがまったく違いますね。
それにしても、何で描きなおしを始めるまでこんなに時間がかかったのか？東京の殺人的な暑さです。
こう暑いと、たいていの人間は何にも集中できなくなります。

Another “cartoon” to illustrate my other website, which is available in Japanese.
It elaborates on the inseparability between nuclear power generation and weapons.
I tried to create a single cartoon that stands for that inseparability. Alas, that was a tough job —
I hope you see this one here somehow stands for that inseparability.

私のもう１つのウェブサイト、「やかんをのせたら～～」用の漫画、もう１つ。
「やかんをのせたら～～」では、核発電（原子力発電）と核兵器の不可分性にフォーカスを当てて
アレコレ説明しております。
その不可分性を１枚で図示する漫画を描ことしたのですが、なかなか難しいです。
ここに紹介しているこのイラストで、何とか表れているでしょうか？

単なる漫画、紙にペン

So, here is another “just cartoon” to illustrate my other website — but as many of you notice, it is inspired by Alexej von Jawlensky !
私のもう1つのウェブサイト「やかんをのせたら～～」のための漫画をもう1つ。単なる漫画ですけど、ご察しのとおり、ヤウレンスキーから着想を得ています。

Recently, I described some hardship I experienced while working on cartoons to illustrate my other website,
a Japanese site on inseparability between nuclear weapons and power.
I have been trained as a “fine art” painter and NOT as a cartoonist. I, therefore, always experience the
sense of being “out of place” when I work on cartoons, though the Jp website needs to be illustrated with, preferably, cartoons.

After some struggling, I think I’ve found a way — “fine-art inspired cartoons”, like the one shown here.

このところ、私のもう1つのウェブサイトのための漫画を描いていて体験する困難について述べてきました。日本語の、核兵器と核発電の不可分性を訴えるサイトですね。
私はあくまで「ファインアート」の絵かきとしての訓練は受けてきましたが、漫画家としての訓練は受けておりません。ところが、私の日本語ウェブサイトの方は、できれば漫画をイラストに使った方が望ましいのですね。それで漫画を描こうとするのですが、どうも「自分の畑」じゃないと ・・・

しかし。そうした苦闘をいくらか経たうえで、やっと方向性を見つけました。下に示すような、「ファインアートに影響された漫画」という方向ですね。

ここ東京では、何週間か殺人的な暑さ（実際、多くの人たちが熱中症で救急搬送されました）
が続いた後、急に心地よく涼しい日が何日か続いております。
こういう場合、私は夏バテから回復するため、2～3日休みが必要になります。
次の絵画を紹介するまで、しばしお待ちくださいませ。

今日のところは、何年も前に描いた点描実験でご勘弁を。

As I confessed in the post just below, I’m trained as a “fine art” painter and not as
a cartoonist. Yet then, why do I work on some cartoons at all?
My other website, which is a Japanese anti-nuke one, contains some long text on
nuclear arms races, proliferation risks, etc., which need to be illustrated. And many of
illustrations need to “explain” what is described in the corresponding text.
For such a purpose, I have to admit that cartoons work better than “fine art” paintings.

すぐ下の投稿で述べたように、私は「ファインアート」の絵かきとしての訓練は
受けておりますが、漫画を描く訓練は、受けておりません。でもだったら、いったい
なんで漫画を描く場合があるのか？
私のもう1つのウェブサイト、「やかんをのせたら～～」は日本語での反核サイトでして、
核軍拡競争や発電からの核兵器拡散リスクなどに関して、かなり長いテキストを
書いております。そうなると、イラストが必要に。そして、この種のイラストの場合、
本文を説明するイラストが必要になることが、よくあるのですね。
そうした説明目的の場合、「ファインアート」よりも「漫画」の方が効果的な場合が
覆いのは、認めないわけには ・・・

As some of you know, I’m running two websites. One is this “Heeday Francis’s Paintings”.
The other is a Japanese anti-nuke site.

The other anti-nuke one contains a lot of Jp text — you know, it deals with
such a serious subject.
Still, long text needs some illustrations. Nobody appreciates a long page of on-going
text alone.
Since “fine” art paintings take weeks to complete, such “text illustrations” should
often be line drawing cartoons.

Alas, I’m a painter and not trained as a cartoonist, as you can easily tell from the
clumsy example shown here.
Sorry, but I have no intention to shift my focus away from “fine art” paintings —
When I make some “serious illustrations”, they are more like “fine art”, as the other
example below shows.

皆様の中の一部の方々がご存じのように、私は2つのウェブサイトを運営しております。
１つはこの、Heeday Francis’s Paintings。
もう１つは日本語の反核ウェブサイト「やかんをのせたら「平和利用」？」で、
http://ermite.just-size.net/nucleare/
にございます。

その反核ウェブサイトには、日本語の長いテキストがひしめいております。話題が
深刻なものですから、そうなってしまうのはご理解いただけますよね？
それでも、長いテキストにはイラストが必要です。長い文章ばかりがひたすら続く・・
というのでは、誰も読みたくありませんよね。
「ファインアート」系の絵画は完成させるのに少なくても何週間もかかるので、
こういうイラストレーションでは、線描の漫画が適切となる場合が多いのですね。

ありゃま、私は絵画を描く訓練は受けていても、漫画を描く訓練は受けて
おりません。下の、ぎこちない「漫画」の実例からも、お判りのとおりです。
その点は、申し訳なく思うのですが、自分のフォーカスを「ファインアート系の」
絵画から漫画に移すつもりは、ないのです。
イラストレーションをまじめに描く場合、私はやはり「ファインアート」ぽくなります。

本日後ほど（９日）、COVID19のワクチン接種を受けます。
副反応のため明日、丸一日休んでいる必要が生じた場合には、明日１０日は新たな投稿は
できなくなります。
その場合、ご心配なく。休んでいるだけですから。

In the painting terminology, we call it a “support”.
The support of an oil painting can be canvas, wooden panel, or a card board.
In case of a soft/oil/wax pastel painting, the support is usually paper.

And the support matters!
See the detail photo above, and know that I tried everything to
spread the applied oil pastel evenly on the paper surface.
Alas, nothing worked, and a closer look at the surface revealed that
the paper surface itself is uneven!
And the paper is of poor quality.

I tried this cheap paper simply to see how actually usable it is, and
what I have found is that it is not usable with pastels.

So, artists, please be careful with some cheap paper!

絵画用語では、「支持体」と呼んでいます。
油彩画なら、支持体とはキャンヴァスや木製パネル、厚紙など。
ソフト／オイル／ワックスパステルなら、多くの場合、支持体は紙。

そして、支持体は画面を左右します！
上のlでぃて＾るの写真をご覧くださいませ。
この紙の表面にオイルパステルを均一に広げようと、あらゆる手を
尽くしました。
何をやっても均一にならないので、表面をよく見てみると、
紙の表面そのものが不均一なのでした！
質の良くない紙だったのです。

安価で質の良くない紙だったのですが、どこまでパステル類に使えるかを
実験したくて、買ってみたものでした。

アーティストの皆さん、安価な紙には気をつけましょうね！

もっと質の良い紙で、いずれやり直します。
