I joined another croquis (quick drawing) session on Dec. 28.
As usual, 20 minutes x 6 poses.

With all the six poses, I experimented with “marker lines only.”

The left croquis above I did in 20 minutes.
The right one, I worked during a break as well. It took me 30 minutes in all.

Yet after all, why do I try experiments??
Of course, to learn more about what lines, shapes, colors, etc. do.

Yet why with straight lines only, in these two croquis?
Well, “straight lines” are usually considered to be mechanical and
soulless. I, however, tried to make something organic (the body) out of inorganic.

12月28日にも、クロッキー（速写画）会に行ってきました。
いつもどおり、20分 x 6ポーズです。

6ポーズとも「マーカーの線だけで」実験しました。

上の左側のクロッキーは、20分。
右側は、休憩時間も利用して、30分でした。

でも、そもそも何のために、こうした実験をするのでしょうか？
言うまでもなく、各種の線や形態、色彩などなどが何をやらかすかを
学ぶためですね。

しかし、この2枚のクロッキーでは、なぜ「直線だけ」を？
通常、直線とは機械的で魂のこもらないものと思われていますが、
ここで私は無機的なもので有機的な（身体）ものを表して見たかったのですね。

Coarse, isn’t it?

Traditional visual depictions of the “angels of the elements”
are often way more delicate and sophisticated than this, I know.

Yet think of this — if there are some invisible beings of wisdom and force
that control the elements of nature, do they look “nice and human-like”??
Are they clear to our human senses??

Rather, I think such beings are way above our perception and understanding.
Our eyes can only barely recognize them.

So, I determined to make vague and coarse presentations of such beings.
That is why I chose the right medium for vague and coarse painting — oil pastel.

荒々しいですよね？

伝統的には、「4大元素の天使」を描いた絵画の多くは、
もっとデリケートで丁寧な描き方のものであることは、存じております。

でも、よく考えてみてください。自然界の4元素を操る知恵と力ある存在が本当に
あったとしたら、「馴染みやすい、人間のような姿」などしているのでしょうか？
そもそも、我々の感覚で明確に捉えられるのでしょうか？

むしろ、そんな存在であれば、我々の認知や理解を超えているのじゃ？
我々の目では、かろうじて捉えられるだけでは？

そこで私は、おぼろげで荒々しい描き方をすることにしたのですね。
画材も、そのために「不明瞭で荒っぽい画材」つまりオイルパステルを選んだのです。

Kal Mosa II, Stage 3 / ステージ３

This is a further development of what I showed below on Dec. 15.

As I explained below on Dec. 11.
“kal mosa” is the Hebrew for “every(thing) that proceeds from (the mouth
of God)”. From Deuteronomy 8:3 of the Torah.

Words are not the only thing that comes out of a mouth.
More frequently, it is “breath”, am I right??
Without Divine breath, no life form can stand —
thus, naturally, no one can “live on bread alone” (Luke 4: 4).
Without Divine breath in us, no food would make any sense to us!

Thus, Luke 4: 4 is NOT some “high-brow, ethical teaching” but
an “obvious statement of facts”, seen this way.

In this painting, I am struggling to depict that
“Divine breath” —

下の12月15日に紹介したもの、さらに描き込みました。
kal mosa” というヘブライ語は「（神の口から）出るすべての（もの）」と
いう意味で、トーラーの「第2トーラー書」（申命記）8:3にあります。

口から出るものと言えば、言葉だけじゃないですよね。
もっと頻繁に出てくるのは、そう、息です。
「神の息」つまり生命力を受けないと、どのような形態の生命も
存続できません。
そう考えるなら、ルカ福音書4:4 にある「人はパンのみにて
生きるものではない」は、何も高尚な倫理的な教えなどではなく、
自明な事実を示すものに過ぎません。
生命力がないとき、どのような食べ物も意味をなさないのですから。

この絵画では、私はそうした「生命力」をなんとか表したいのですね。

Initial sketch for “Piece 1: Angel of Fire” / 「ピース１ － 火の天使」のための、下絵

(;; ^o^)  What!?!? Just a scratch!?
Of course, this is the initial sketch — I’m working on it on days to come!

I’m working on a 4-piece suite titled “Angels of the Elements” — by “the elements”
I’m not referring to modern hydrogen, oxygen, etc., but to the classical
“fire, water, earth, and wind (air)”.

When you look at traditional depictions of such angels,
you’ll see most of them painted in crafty, delicate styles.

Yet let’s think about them again — are our eyes good enough to
see such “angels” (wisdom and force) with precision??
More probably, we are only capable of seeing some coarse and
vague images of them.

So, I’ve decided to make some coarse and vague depictions of them,
with a coarse and vague medium — oil pastel!

ええ、これは描き始めの下絵です。これから何日も、作業を進めてまいります。

“Angels of the Elements”（4大元素の天使たち）という
4ピースの連作の制作を開始したところなんです。
「元素」といっても近代の水素や酸素のことじゃなくて、古典的な
「火、水、地、風（空気）」のことですが。

古典的な絵画でこの種の天使の描画を見ると、古典的な絵画ですから、
いかにも上手な、繊細な描写が施されていることが多いですよね。

でも、考えてみれば、人間の眼はそうした「天使たち」（自然界の知恵と力）を
正確に捉えられるのでしょうか？？
おそらくは、我々には荒々しく曖昧な姿しか、捉えられないのじゃ？

そこで、荒々しく曖昧な画像を描くことにしました。
荒々しく曖昧な画材、つまりオイルパステルで。

Just a 100-min drawing / 単なる100分デッサン

On December 15, I joined a drawing session again — 100 minutes of the same pose, same model.
As you see, the model turned her back straight at me, and none of the artists was authorized to ask the model to change her posture / orientation.

No problem to me — with the model facing “that way”, I can imagine she/he is
looking at something far away and create some sense of “something beyond”.

12月15日、またデッサン会に行ってきました。例によって、同じモデルさんの同じポーズを
100分間です。
ご覧のとおり、このポーズでモデルさんは私に背中を向けていました。
参加者の方から、向きやポーズの変更を求めることは許可されていないのです。

私には、問題ありません。モデルさんが「あちら」を向いているのなら、
何か遠くにあるものを見つめているのだと想像して、「何か、彼方にあるもの」と
いう感じを醸し出せるからですね。

“too naive”, yet it is only the beginning.
I’m developing it.

でもそれはまだ、ステージ１です。

kal mosa つまり「（神の口）から出るすべての（もの）」という
以上、何らかの運動が関わりますよね。そこで、運動という
感覚をこの絵画に作りだそうと努めております。
