“Flower of the Night”, done / 完成

Actually, this painting went through Stage 2, but
here allow me to skip that and show you the finished state.

Some new forms of life — so, these flowers are imaginary —
are emerging in the still of the night, witnessed by none.

完成に至る前に、実はステージ２があったのですが、

何か新しい形態の生命が、夜の静寂の中で発生している ・・
当然、この絵の花は想像上の花です ・・ 誰もそれに気が付いていないけど。

What a mediocre painting —
No, this is just a technical experiment, rather than
a “work of painting”!

The “face portion” above is actually approx. 150 x 170 mm (5.9″ x 6.7″)
in size — so, the “hair” is very thin indeed.
And this experiment was done with oil pastel.

You know, oil pastel is a very clumsy medium and it is
usually quite hard to draw very thin lines of less than 1mm (0.04″)
with oil pastel.

So, I experimented with “a very thin brush and baby oil”.
1) Dip the brush head in baby oil.
2) Scrub an oil pastel stick of your choice with the wet brush head.
The head should be now wet with some “solution” of the stick’s color.
3) Draw very fine lines with the colored brush head.

I think the experiment was successful.

I am not one of those painters that put their stress on technicalities,
but once in a while, I do try some technical experiments.

実に凡庸な絵画 ・・・
いえ、これは絵画作品じゃなくて、単なる技法の実験です。

上の「顔の部分」の実物はサイズがおよそ 150 x 170 mm です。
ですから、髪の毛などは大変細いのですね。
そしてこれは、オイルパステルでの実験です。

ご存知の通り、オイルパステルというのは大変不器用な画材で、
1mmよりも細い線を描くには適さないことが圧倒的に多いのですね。

そこで私は、以下の実験をしたわけです：
極細のブラシと、ベビーオイルを使いました。
1) ブラシの先端部を、ベビーオイルに浸す。
2) その先端部で、選んだ色のオイルパステル・スティックをこする。
穂先に、そのスティックの色の「溶液」が出来ているはずです。
3) その穂先で、極めて細い線を描く。

この実験は、うまく行ったように思います。

私は、決して技法に力点を置く絵描きではないのですが、
時にはこうした技法の実験も行っています。

Just another 20-min croquis from Feb. 23 / 単なる20分クロッキー、2月23日のクロッキー会から

Due to the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic, my usual croquis session is closed
until Mar. 20.
So, here is another 20-min croquis from Feb. 23.

As you see, the model looked very “pure and lovely” in this pose,
so I jokingly wrote “Roselein auf der Heiden” — the famous phrase
from Goethe’s poem. F. Schubert wrote a song to it, which is
very well known even today.

SARS-CoV-2 対策で、いつものクロッキー会が3月20日までお休みなのです。
そこで、2月23日の同クロッキー会から、20分クロッキーをもう1つ。

ご覧のとおり、このポーズでのこのモデルさんはとても可憐で無垢に見えますよね？
なので、ジョークとして背後に”Roselein auf der Heiden” と落書きしました。
ゲーテの詩の、有名なフレーズですね。F. Schubert が歌を書き、これも
いまだによく知られています。

So, at long last, this imaginary landscape is done!
Since my poor camera is incapable of catching a “neat”
whole picture of it, above I’ve posted some partial
photos of the picture as well.

What are those “vertical bars”?? I don’t know, honestly —
they just appeared in my sight of imagination!

The sunset is usually associated with “the end, termination,
death, etc.”, but it actually has two sides — yes, an end is the
beginning of something new.

At this stage (just begun), the image looks miserable.

“Flower of the Sunset”（日没の花）の描き始めです。

日没というと多くの場合、「終わり、終了、死」といった
連想をするものですが、実際には何かが終わるということは
次の何かが始まるわけですよね。

描き始めという段階なので、なんやらオンボロに見えますが、
それは今後の記事をお待ちくださいませ。

Piece 2 of the Suite, “Flowers of Hours” —
a four-piece suite of imaginary flowers that
come into blossom during their own hours of the day.

Such a world may not need machine clocks, since
you can tell the time simply by looking at flowers in blossom.
Besides, when the sun is too strong, these flowers of the day
floating in the sky will multiply to keep you cool in their shade.
Then, they give way to the flowers of the sunset —

It might be a world way more relaxing and easy-going than ours!

完成に至る前に、実はステージ２と３があったのですが、

この4連作は、1日のうち決まった時間帯に咲く想像上の花
ばかりを描いたもの。

そんな世界があれば、どの花がどれだけ咲いているかを見れば
時刻が分かるので、機械時計はいらないかも。
しかも、日の光が強すぎるときには花が増殖して「花影」に
私たちを入れてくれるので、涼しくしていられます。
そして日没が近づくと、「日没の花」に舞台を譲るのです。

Another 20-min experiment with ball-point pens / ボールペンでの20分実験、もう1つ

One more of the 20-min croquis experiments with ball-point pens
of five colors I tried at the croquis session of Feb. 23.

Please keep a good distance between your eyes and the PC / smartphone
screen they are watching. At a close look, the ball-point pen lines can
be disturbing. From a good distance, the image should look like a croquis.

2月23日のクロッキー会からの、5色のボールペンによるクロッキー実験、
もう１枚。

PCなりスマートフォンなりの画面とあなたの目の間に、充分な距離を
保ってくださいませ。近くで見ると、ボールペンの線が乱暴に見えると思います。
距離を保ってくだされば、クロッキーらしく見えるはず。
