Still in progress — here’s Stage 3.
It was great to hear my singing voice echoing and filling up the
venue  —

自分の歌う声が反響して会場を埋め尽くしている
のが聞こえたのは、快感でした。

The title in full is
“Ohana-batake” reliance on nuclear deterrence
“Ohana-batake”, literally “flower farm”, here means
“unrealistic wishful belief that disregards reality”.

フルでのタイトルは
“Ohana-batake” reliance on nuclear deterrence
つまり
「核抑止へのお花畑信仰」
です。

I’m an amateur sopranist trained classically.
Once I sang in a big church, to a pipe organ built
as an integral part of the architecture.

The accompanist played it “mercilessly” aloud, and I was
worried whether my solo voice reached the entire audience
well, over the loud pipe organ. Being classically trained, I
do not use a microphone except for recording.
With this worry, I began singing — then, I found that I had a
good friend in the building — the concrete walls. They echoed back
my singing voice, and the echoes that reached my earfs
assured that my voice was reaching the whole church building.

This was pastel painting is a depiction of that experience —
it made me feel like my voice was even ascending beyond the ceiling!

私はアマチュアのソプラニストで、クラシック声楽の
訓練を受けております。

あるとき、大きな教会堂でソロで歌う機会がありました。
伴奏は、その建築に組み合わされたパイプ オルガンです。
オルガニストがその本格的オルガンを「無慈悲に」
大音量で演奏を始め、私ははたして自分ひとりの歌声が
全オーディエンスに届くのか、心配でした。クラシック
なので、私は録音以外にはマイクを使いません。
不安のうちに歌い始めましたが、すぐに助け手がいたのに
気が付きました。
壁から自分の声の反響が聞こえたのですね。壁にしっかりと
私の歌声がぶつかって跳ね返されていたわけですから、
全オーディエンスに間違いなく届いていたはずです。

このワックスパステルの絵画は、その体験を描いたもの。
歌っていた自分の声が、教会の天井すら突き抜けて駆け上って
いくような気分でした。

Here is the priming for a new painting.
”Ohana-batake”, literally “flower farm”, is a Japanese word
often used to indicate a groundless, unrealistic trust in
something wished for.
Now, in Japan today, some people are claiming that
the nation should go for nuclear armament, with
“ohana-batake” belief in nuclear deterrence.

こちらは、新しい作品のための下塗り。
現在の日本では、核抑止を「お花畑信仰」して
核武装なり核共有なりを主張する勢力がありますよね。
それを描く、社会批評的な作品になります。

Way, way below, I showed the sketch for this.
Now, the painting is in progress.
Of course, in reality the model was supported by
a stool, but some poses made her look like
freed from gravity —

ずっと前、この作品のためのスケッチを紹介しました。
現在、描画を進めております。
言うまでもなく、実際にはモデルさんは椅子に支えられ
ていたのですが、ポーズによってはモデルさんが重力から
解放されているように見えたのですね。

So, this pointillism is done.
This flower is toxic, and the story of Narcissus is a sad one,
I know.
Yet there also is a Christian legend that says Narcissus flowers came out
after Jesus’ Resurrection at His tomb.

完成です。
この花には毒がありますし、ナルシスの神話は悲しいものです。
それは、存じております。
でもまた別に、あるキリスト教の伝説では、主のご復活の後で墓にこの花が咲いたそうです。
