“Coming Out of the Mud”, done / 完成

So, the “atmospheric furnace” is gone over here in Tokyo,
and I’m back to normal.
This painting is done.

Last of this year’s “Surviving Heat Spell” series / 今年の「熱波で死なないように」シリーズの最後

I sure hope the Tokyo weather forecasts, which say
today is the last day of the 100F atmospheric furnace,
are right. Come tomorrow, the temperature will
come down.
I sure hope so!

So, here is the last piece of this year’s “Surviving the
Heat Spell” series.
It’s a “curved lines only” croquis experiment, done in
20 minutes back in September 2019.

The intention was to create a drawing made only of
curved lines.

Right in front — often scary

Probably two more days before the “heavenly furnace” shuts down —

Over here in Tokyo, weather forecasts still say
this “natural blast furnace” of the hot spell will leave
this coming Thursday. If correct, I have to get along with
the natural furnace just two more days.

So, this series of “praying for the weather to cool down”
will soon come to the end for this year.

Here, out of my past works, I’ve brought up a live drawing of
a human model seen from the right front.
You see, this angle, from which the model’s eyes stare right
at you, can be scary somehow.

Then, why did I choose this angle??
Easy to explain. The right fron was the only room left.
I arrived at the drawing session venue some 10 minutes
before the session began, yet most of the floor spave was already taken, and “right in front” was the only room left.

So, I intentionally drew the model’s eyes larger than life,
in order to magnify the “scary” effect.

“Narcissus”, almost done / 完成間近

OK, weather forecasts keep saying that come Wednesday,
the current life-threatening heat will leave.
So, on Sept. 3, I’ll resume my usual work.
Then in the following week, I plan to finish
this “Naricissus” off.

予報を見ていると、来週水曜日で現在のあまりにも危険な
熱波は、去っていく見込みです。
そこで、その9月3日から平常の仕事を再開する予定です。
その次の週には、このNarcissusも完成させる計画です。

Five more days of deadly heat — 5

Weather forecasts here say that this killing heat spell will
remain five more days, until next Wednesday.
So, as I survive the five more days, allow me to post
a few more drawings from the past.

This 20-min croquis shown below is another attempt
to depict the resonance beyween the motif (model) and
the space around it.

Go away, deadly heat!! — 4

So, as I just described in the post just below,
I treat the “motif” and the “space around it” as a sort of
unity, or at least “two interacting with each other”.

Here is another example of that, this time attempted with
felt-tip pens.

Memories in the Killing Heat – 3

The heat is still here —
The excessive sunlight makes the empty space — that accommodates
the heat — seem warped.
That reminded me of this 20-min croquis from 2017.
Without the warped background, this would seem “just another
croquis”.  However, the few curves in the background create some
vibrations and movements in the model. “Empty space” is certainly
not empty.

“Undercover Treaty”

Way back from 1989 — the work itself is not with me anymore.
606 x 500mm (23.9″ x 19.7″)
Oil and collage on “double canvas” (one sheet right beneath another),
with part of the “upper canvas” torn open
Newspaper on the frame

OK, part of the “surface canvas” is cut open to reveal the soldier’s
scream on the “concealed canvas”.
Collaged on the surface canvas are:
photo film and magazine pages
The frame is wrapped up in newspaper — often, media coverages
cover up what goes on behind.

It’s over 100F again, and I cannot concentrate on
drawing / painting.
So, hoping the heat spell will end soon,
here’s a work from the past.
Looking back, every summer ended eventually,
so just let me rest for now —

In this pose, the model was “looking faraway”,
I wanted to create an impression that she was
looking at something outside the picture.
