Below on June 22nd, I showed the front and back sides of a
T-shirt I dyed for a friend.
She wanted me to paint a message on it, and here it is!
She wanted “Article 9,” the pacifist article of Japan’s Constitution.
She hopes to retain it and often joins pro-Article 9 marches and street actions.

Before calling her or me “leftist” or throwing insults and/or stones
at me or her, please keep in mind that this is a highly important issue
that takes a lot of calm and constructive discussions.

For instance, over here in Japan, today there are many anti-Article 9
arguments that say the existing constitution was “pushed” to Japan
by the General Headquarters shortly after the end of WWII.

That’s NOT the case.
The plain fact is that on January 24, 1946, Kijuro Shidehara, then Prime Minister of Japan, met with Douglas MacArthur and proposed a pacifist constitution.
So, Article 9 was established upon the Japanese intention.
If you read Japanese, you can easily find this fact in Japanese Wikipedia

The English Wikipedia page on Shidehara also has some mentions to the pacifist

Also, lately, a calligraphy work made by the former prime minister was discovered,
with a note saying “This is a note to Article 9.” Again, if you read Japanese,

A crucial issue requires calm, serious, and constructive discussions, and
they have to stand on facts, not on mass media rumors.

So, what is my own opinion on the pacifist article??
Well, already back in 1978, at a Diet Session, then Prime Minister Takeo Fukuda said,
concerning Japan’s (future) possession of nuclear weapons,
something like: “Our interpretation of Article 9 does not prohibit our
nation from having nuclear weapons in all cases. Japan could possess a
necessary minimum amount of such weapons for the sake of self-defense.
Note, however, that Japan stands firmly on its Three Non-Nuclear Principles.”
Now, if an “interpretation” like this has been around over the last 41 years
at least, what sense is there in amending Article 9???

その友人があるメッセージをご希望でしたので、それを描いたところを、
今日はお見せします。
その友人がご希望のメッセージは、（日本国憲法の）「9条」でした。
その友人は9条の維持を願い、そのためのストリート アクションや
デモなどによく参加してらっしゃいます。

その友人なり私なりを「左翼」呼ばわりしたり、侮辱や石ころを投げつける前に、
こうした重要な問題では冷静で建設的な対話が欠かせないということを
心に留めたく思います。

例えば日本では現在、9条廃止を主張する意見では、
これが第二次大戦終了後にGHQによって日本に「押し付けられた」のだ、
とする主張がまかり通っていますよね。

事実は、そうじゃありません。
事実としては、1946年1月24日、当時の総理大臣 幣原喜重郎がダグラス マッカーサーと
会談、平和憲法を提案したのでした。
ですから9条は、何も「押し付け」ではなく、日本側からの提案だったのです。

さらに最近、幣原元首相による書道の掛け軸が発見されています。

重大な問題では、冷静で真剣、そして建設的な対話が必要です。
そしてそれは、事実に基づいていませんとね。マスメディアのうわさに、ではなく。

では、私自身は、どういう見解なのか？？
実はすでに1978年、ときの福田赳夫首相が国会答弁で、日本の核兵器保有について、
「憲法9条の解釈として、絶対に持てないということではない。必要最低限の自衛のためであれば
持ちうる。ただ、非核三原則を国是としている」
と述べています。
こういう「解釈」がすでに少なくても41年間もまかり通っているのであれば、
今更9条を改正／改変したところで、何の意味があるのでしょうか？？

20-min experiment with limitation of wax pastel colors / ワックスパステルの色数の制約に関する、20分の実験

Here is a 20-min croquis (quick drawing) from June 16.
I experimented using pink wax pastel (crayon) against a reddish brown background.
The result, as you see, is the vague contrast between the “two reds.”
This was something I expected.
One current disadvantage with wax pastel is the limitation of colors available.

Of course, shown above is just a 20-min quick drawing.
I just wanted to “try, err, and see what happens.”
I try many things at 20-min croquis sessions, to learn many things.

Now, I have to consider how to make the most out of the limited colors currently available.
So, I’ll have to try more experiments —

こちらは、6月16日の20分クロッキー（速写画）です。
赤系の茶色の背景にピンクで描く実験ですね。どちらの色も、ワックスパステル（クレヨン）。
結果は、ご覧のとおり、「赤系統の2色」のコントラストが不明瞭ですよね。
これは、予想通りでした。
現在のところ、ワックスパステルの不利な点として、出回っている色数が限られているのですね。

もちろん、ここに紹介しているのは単に20分クロッキーです。
私は、「試して、エラーをして、どうなるか見たかった」のですね。
20分クロッキーでは、私はアレコレ試してアレコレ学びます。

今後、限られた色数をどう最大限に活用するか、さらにアレコレ
実験しないといけませんね。

So, this one is done!
The original “real stuff” was a pot of congestion, consisting of
leaves of dark green and flowers of dark purple.
I wanted to turn it into something brighter and more vivacious.

The grass field is greener in the actual painting, but the
scanner turned it into something quite yellowish —-

At the site of this azalea way, which was actually a short one,
I wished it had extended to the horizon.
Then, over the horizon, where should it take us??
Somewhere above this world, I wish!

実際の絵画では草原はもう少し緑色なのですが、
スキャナーに欠けると黄色になってしまいました。

もとの「ツツジの道」の実物は、実は短いもので、
私はそれが地平線まで伸びていたらなあと考えていました。
地平線まで行くと、そこからどこに行くのか？
この時空を超えたところに ・・・ と私は願ったのですね。

東京のある公園で、小さな「ツツジの道」を見つけたのですね。

下の6月8日から、いくらか進みました。
前回も申しましたが、非常にうっそうと暗いセイヨウヒルガオの鉢植えがあったので、
それを「明るく、生命力の溢れた感じ」に変えたいのですね。それが、
この作品の意図です。

20-min croquis, just my own training / ２０分クロッキー、単に自分の訓練用に描いたもの

As you can easily tell, I’m a colorist — I usually make color drawings
even at croquis sessions.
However, this doesn’t mean I ignore monochrome drawing disciplines.
Occasionally, I make monochrome drawings for training as well.
Here, this 20-min single-color drawing should prove that.

お分かりのとおり、私はカラーリストで多くの場合、
クロッキー会でも色彩を使っています。
でも、モノクロで描くデッサンの訓練を無視しているわけじゃ、ありません。
ときに私も、自分の訓練のためモノクロのデッサンをします。
本日お見せしているのは、そうした実例としての２０分クロッキー。

At a certain park in Tokyo, I found a little “azalea way” — a short promenade with
azaleas planted on both sides.
It was lovely but quite short. I wished for one stretching to the horizon —

I just made my wish into a painting. Here is its Stage 1.

東京のある公園で、小さな「ツツジの道」を見つけたのですね。
短い散歩道の両側に、ツツジが植えてあるのです。
きれいなのですが、距離が短い。この道が、地平線まで伸びていたらなあと、
想像していました。

その想像を得に描いたものです。これがステージ１．

I showed Stage 1 of this protest painting.
Protest to what?

This last April, the Nagoya District Court of Japan gave a “not guilty” judgment
to a father who raped his own biological daughter over and over again.
(For details on this deplorable court decision, please see
http://www.asahi.com/ajw/articles/AJ201904070028.html )

This court ruling is something beyond the wildest imagination of almost any decent citizen, so I have to protest it.
Rapes must be prohibited, not just in public spaces but in offices, schools,
social welfare facilities, families, etc. as well!

このプロテスト絵画のステージ１を紹介しました。
何へのプロテストなのか？

今年4月、名古屋地裁で、自分の遺伝子上の娘をたびたびレイプしていた父親に、
無罪判決を言い渡しました。

この判決は、ほとんどの良識ある市民の想像を超えるもので、プロテストすべきですね。
レイプなんて行為は、公的空間だけじゃなく、オフィスであろうが学校であろうが、
福祉施設であろうが、家庭であろうが、してはいけないことですよね。

今日は、そのステージ２。
