“Convolvulus sabatius”, Stage 1 — work in progress / “セイヨウヒルガオ”、ステージ1 ・・ まだ制作進行中

Below on May 20, I posted the initial sketch of this “Convolvulus sabatius” painting.
By today, the painting has progressed somehow.
The real thing was rather gloomy in congestion of dark (leaf) green and
dark (petal) purple.
I wanted to turn it into something more luminescent and vivacious —

下の5月20日、この “Convolvulus sabatius” （セイヨウヒルガオ）の
スケッチを紹介しました。
本日までに、いくらか進んでおります。
実物は、暗い緑の葉と暗い紫の花とがうっそうと茂る、
陰鬱な植物だったのですね。
そこで、それを何とか光と生命力に溢れたものにしたいのです。

Now, put on a torso.

Actually, in direct sunshine, the light lavender looks
more luminous. It is hard to capture with a camera.
(I’m not a photographer!)

下の6月1日の染めたシャツ、今度はトルソーに着せてみました。

実を言うと、直射日光の下では、ラベンダーがもっと輝いて見えます。
でも、カメラでそれを捉えられません。私は写真家ではないので、
その辺はご勘弁を！

Risen lilies, done / 完成

Not much difference from Stage 3 of May 16 below —
Stage 3 was already close to the finish.
Anyway, this is a depiction of my wild imagination,
“What will lilies look like, when they are resurrected?”

完成です。
下の5月16日のステージ3から、それほど変化していませんね。
ステージ3が、かなり歓声に近かったのです。
とにかく、「ユリそのものが復活する時、どんな姿なのだろうか？」
というワイルドな想像の表現です。

Back, after the dyes have dried / ウラ面、染料が乾いた後

Sequel to the dyed shirt post of May 25 below.
As you see, the dyes considerably changed their colors
as they dried.
This is where a dyeing artist has to be very careful.

ご覧のとおり、染料は乾くにつれて色合いを変えます。
この点、「染めアーティスト」は、かなり注意しないといけないのですね。

20-min croquis of “two masses combined”

Nope. This is just a 20-min croquis from May 26.

The intention of this pose was to see a human body as some
“mass” — thus the artists were advised to draw this scene as
“a combination of two masses”

In a case like this, even I use a single monochrome pencil —
to emphasize the masses, not colors or space.

I hope I’ve made it.

いえいえ。そうじゃなくて、単なる20分クロッキーです。

この組み合わせの狙いは、人体をマッスとして捉えること。
ですからアーティストたちは、このシーンを「2つのマッスの組み合わせ」と
して描くよう求められました。

こういう場合には、私でさえモノクロ鉛筆を使います。
色彩や空間ではなく、マッスを強調するために。

うまくいきましたでしょうか？

Front, soon after the dyeing / 前面、染めてすぐ

Below on May 18, I showed some scenes from dye mix preparation.

Here, the front side of the shirt is dyed — the colors look strong,
but this photo was taken while the dyes were wet.
One problem with dyeing is the dyes change their colors as they dry up.

So, let’s wait and see —

下の5月18日、染料ミックスを調合している様子をお見せしました。

今日は、染め終えた前面。
色合いが強く見えますが、この撮影の時点ではまだ、染料が
まったく乾いていなかったのです。
染め作業での問題の1つとして、染料の色は乾くにつれて
変化していくのですね。

ですから、乾いてどうなるか、待ちましょう ・・・

20-min croquis, from an “unlucky” angle / 20分クロッキー、「不運な」アングルから

Nothing much to say — I joined another croquis session on May 12.
As usual, 20 minutes x 6 poses.

The model showed her soles to me with her back upward. So, usually,
I was very unlucky. Just imagine taking a photo of the pose from an angle like that.
You’d end up with the two soles before the buttocks, which looks like
a creature from the outer space!!

So, to treat the model as a human, I cut off one of the sole (out of the croquis paper),
and emphasized the head, which looks like “moving up.”
With the yellow light above right, the model seems to be waking up and
reaching for the light — I hope.

なんてことも、ありません。5月12日のクロッキー会から、例によって20分クロッキーです。
いつもどおり、20分 X ６ポーズ。

このポーズでは、モデルさんが足の裏を私に向けたのですね。うつぶせで。
普通なら、これはアンラッキー。ちょっと想像してみてください。あなたがその場で、この
ポーズのモデルさんをこのアングルで写真に撮るとしたら ～～
おそらく、2本の足の足裏が前面に出て、その背後にお尻があるという画面になりますよね。
あたかも、宇宙から来た未知の生物のように見えます。

そこで、モデルさんをあくまで人間として敬意を込めて扱うため、私は足裏の1つを
紙の外部に押しやり（紙の外にあることにして、描かない）、頭部を強調しました。頭部が、「上へと動いている」かのように見受けられたのですね。
右上の黄色い光を浴びて、モデルさんが光に目覚め光へと近づこうとしている～～
そんな感じを狙ったのですけど、そんな感じになってますでしょうか？

Convolvulus sabatius, initial sketch / セイヨウヒルガオ、制作初めのスケッチ

This last Easter, I received a pot of convolvulus sabatius as a present.
As you know, this flower, when potted, often comes in dark colors —
mine had dark purple flowers surrounded by crowded dark green leaves.

Thus, the whole thing looked gloomy.
I wanted to change it into something brighter and vivacious.

I began the attempt with this sketch.
I’ll post its development in the coming weeks.

この4月下旬のイースターに、セイヨウヒルガオの鉢をプレゼントに頂きました。
ご存知のようにこの花は、暗い紫の場合、鉢植えの全体が暗い感じになります。
暗い紫の花が、重い緑の茂った葉に囲まれていて。

それで、全体が暗く重い感じになりますよね。
それを何とか、明るく生き生きした感じに変えたかったのです。

その作業を、このスケッチで開始しました。
その様子を、これから何週間かお見せしていきますね。

Three different mixes / 3種類のミックス

This mix looks fine, but is too weak when actually applied to clothes / このミックスはそれ自体ではよさそうに見えるのですが、実際に衣服を染めてみると、色が弱すぎるのです

Nice blue, but “too blue” in this case — I wanted a light lavender / いいブルーですが、このケースではブルーすぎます。ライト ラベンダーが欲しいので

Looks like a nice lavender — I think I’ll go with this. / よさそうなラベンダーです。これで行こうと思います

I wanted to dye a solid white shirt into a nice light lavender, which is
not available as a ready-made dye. So, I had to mix some dyes to create
the color.
And this is way tougher than many think —

Dyes on clothes often look too strong while they are wet,
but turn quite pale once they are dry.
So, with my experiences, I have to guess the right vividity
of each dye mix.

So, the final result? Please wait until the dyes on the actual shirt dry!

ある真っ白なシャツを染めて、ライト ラベンダーにしたかったのです。
ライト ラベンダーという染料は、出来合いのものでは見当たりませんでした。
それで、何種類か染料をミックスして、作り出さないといけません。
その染料のミックスという作業が、多くの方々が思っているより、ずっと大変なのです。

衣服に染料を施すと、その時点ではかなり強い色に見えるのですが、
乾くと随分弱い色になることが多いのです。
そこで経験を活かして、各ミックスの色の強さを適切に調合しないといけません。

最終的には、どうなったでしょうか？それは、乾燥してから投稿しますね。
