“No, dad, please don’t”, Piece I, Stage I / ピース I のステージ I

Below on April 22, I posted a sketch for a painting on a grave social issue —
— a dad sexually abusing his daughter.

I’ve decided to make it a two-piece painting, and here is Stage 1 of Piece 1.

Of course, it’s a work just begun.

4月22日、父親による娘の性的虐待という深刻な社会問題を
扱った絵画のスケッチをお見せしました。

この作品は、２ピースの絵画にすることにしました。
ここにあるのは、ピース１のステージ１。

もちろん、描き始めたところです。

Booklet cover illustration, revised to the client’s change of mind / ブックレットの表紙イラスト、クライアントの方針変更に応じて変更したもの

Way below on April 14 (scroll down, click “Older posts”, and then scroll down),
I showed my cover illustration for a booklet, drawn to the client’s order.
So far, so good.

Now, if you are an artist, you know very well a client can change his/her mind,
after seeking for someone else’s opinions, for instance.

With this booklet cover illustration, that is precisely what happened —
some people said the crucified hand looked so painful.
So the client changed his mind.

I can adjust to such sudden changes —
— to keep the “signifie” almost the same while changing the “signifient”
to something less “painful”,  I replaced the crucified arm with a passion flower.

Now, the printing starts soon.

ずっと下の4月14日（スクロールダウンして Older postsをクリック、そしてもう少し
スクロールダウン）、あるブックレットの表紙イラストをお見せしました。
あるクライアントからのご要望によるものでした。
別に問題はなかったのですが ・・・

アーティストの皆様なら、クライアントというものは、ときに方針を変更するものだ
ということをご存知ですよね。
特に、誰か他人の意見を求めた後など。

この表紙イラストの場合、そうしたことがまさしく起こりました。
4月14日の十字架につけられた腕は、痛々しすぎるというわけです。
そこで、クライアントが方針を変更されました。

そうした変更にも、対応しております。
「シニフィアン」を「あまり痛々しくないもの」に変更しながら、
「シニフィエ」はほぼ同じに維持できるよう、十字架の腕を
パッションフラワーに代えました。

もうすぐ、印刷が始まります。

100-min drawing exercise / 100分でのデッサン練習

I don’t care how “models” are in the fashion industry.
To me, many of them look like “stick people”.
Yet I have no right to put my silly nose in a discipline not mine.

As far as painting and drawing are concerned, a “good model”
considers his/her poses well and sees the artists’ response at
drawing sessions.

And at drawing sessions, many of us, artists, wish to draw
as many different types of bodies as available — young and old,
men and women, lean, medium, and, well, “big”, different skin colors,
and so on.

At the 100-min drawing session I joined on May 6, we had
precisely such a model.
She carefully thought about her pose, saw responses from us, artists.
Also, as you see above, she had a type of body hard to find
on a fashion show runway.

Unless they are engaged in some fashion-related projects,
many painters wish to study and draw and paint many different
shapes of bodies.
Each body shape has its raison d’etre, and many of us, artists,
appreciate that!

ファッション業界での「モデルさん」のことは、私は存じません。
まあ、そうしたモデルさんの多くは、私には「スティックマン」みたいに
見えるのですが。
でも、自分の知らない業界のことに、口を突っ込むつもりはありません。

絵画に関する限り、「良いモデルさん」とは、ご自分のポーズをよく考え、
デッサン会などではポーズに対するアーティストたちの反応を
見て取る人のことですね。

それにデッサン会だと、アーティストの多くはできるだけ色々な体型を
描いてみたいのです。老若男女、痩せた人、中肉、肉付きの良い人、
いろいろな肌の色、その他。

私は5月6日に100分デッサン会に参加したのですが、
まさしくそんな優れたモデルさんを描けました。
丹念にご自分のポーズを検討し、ポーズに対する私たち
アーティストの反応を求めてらっしゃいました。
それに、上の画像でお分かりのように、ファッションショーの
ランウェイではお目にかかれないような体型の方でした。

ファッション関係のプロジェクトにでも関わっていない限り、
多くの絵描きは多様な体型を学び、描きたいのですね。

どのような体型であれ、それぞれに存在理由があって、
その良さをアーティストの多くは理解・描写したいのです。

So, this is done!

This is a protest against a discriminating utterance
by a member of Japan’s Parliament (Diet).
The member called LGBTs “unproductive.”
Anyone can tell the member was seriously concerned over
Japan’s declining population.
However, the nation had 168, 015 cases of abortion
(https://www.mhlw.go.jp/toukei/saikin/hw/eisei_houkoku/16/dl/kekka6.pdf)
while the total national births stood at 976,978, in 2016,
according to Japan’s Ministry of Health.

You see, the government needs to help people out of the need to abort,
before it calls some people “unproductive.”

本作は、日本のある国会議員による差別的発言への抗議です。
その議員はLGBTの人たちのことを、「非生産的」と呼んだのです。
ご存知のとおり、日本の人口減少を憂えての発言だったのでしょう。
しかし。
同国の厚労省のデータによれば、同国の2016年の
出生数が976,978 であったのに対し
(https://www.mhlw.go.jp/toukei/saikin/hw/eisei_houkoku/16/dl/kekka6.pdf)
人工妊娠中絶の件数は168, 015 に達していたそうです。

ある種の市民を「非生産的」と呼ぶよりも、
市民が妊娠中絶をする必要性を軽減するようにする責任が、
政府にはあるはずです。

20-min croquis itself / 20分クロッキー自体

You know, sometimes at a croquis session, the model lies down
with his/her head or feet facing me — does he/she hate me??
As you can easily tell, such an angle gives me and any other artist a tough time.

Above, the result of my 20 minutes of drawing such a model.
No time to paint any shadows below the body.
And with no shadow, the model looks like floating in the air —
— making this croquis quite funny.

So, why not add shadows and background to make her really
“being lifted up into the air”??

Shown below is such an attempt. I added the shadows and background
later.
Hope you see the model as “being lifted up”.

たぶんご存じのように、クロッキー会ではモデルさんが私の方に頭や足を向けて
横たわる場合があります。私って、モデルさんに嫌われてるんでしょうかね？
お分かりのとおり、こういうアングルだとかなり描きにくいのですね。

上の画像は、そうした20分クロッキーです。
身体の下に影を描く時間が、ありませんでした。
影がないと、実に空中を浮遊しているかのように見えますよね。
その意味で、奇妙なクロッキーになっています。

そこで。　背景と影を加えて、実際に「空中へと浮上しつつある」
ように見せることにしました。

その結果を、下に。後で、影と背景を加えたものですね。
モデルさんが「浮かびつつあるように」見えますでしょうか？

The 20-min croquis / 元の20分クロッキー

I joined another croquis session on April 28 — as usual, 20 minutes x 6 poses.
So, this (above) is just another 20-min croquis, and nothing much.

Still, I like the meditative atmosphere this croquis carries —
— so, I added a quick background to it (below).

As you know, croquis pieces are coarse by their very nature. Still,
some can incite some thought, inspiration, incitement, etc. in the
viewer’s mind.
This piece, for example, invites the viewer to mediation.
At least, to me it does.
I sure hope you find it like that too.

4月28日、またクロッキー会に行ってきました。いつものように、20分 x 6ポーズです。
上の画像はその１つ。ただの20分クロッキーでして、何ということもありません。

ただ、このクロッキーはどこか瞑想的で、自分としてはそれが気に入っています。
それで、下の画像は簡単な背景を加えたものです。

ご存知のとおり、クロッキーはその性質上、荒っぽいものになりやすいものです。
それでも、中には思考やインスピレーション、やる気などを促すようなクロッキーもあります。
このクロッキーですと、見る人を瞑想へと招くように、少なくても私は思います。
皆様も、そんな瞑想へと招くような感触を得ていただけると嬉しいのですが。

Flowers are a very common motif, so I am striving to “spiritualize” them.
I am also trying to turn wax pastel (crayon) into a “serious artists’ medium.”

Here is part of my efforts to do so —
Lilies are commonly used as part of Easter celebrations, and
I have a funny imagination as to —
— what will lilies look like, when they are themselves “resurrected”???

花というのは、大変良くあるモチーフで、それをどうやって
「スピリチャル化」できるのか？ その課題に取り組んでおります。

そうした努力の一例を。
ユリは、イースターのお祝いで広く用いられていますね。
そこで、私としてはある想像をしております ・・・
「ユリ自体が ”復活” するとき、どのような姿になるのか？？？」
