On January 7th, I joined another croquis session. As usual, there were 6 poses, 20 minutes each, but this time the model was a male. Lucky!

If you go to croquis sessions here in Tokyo, you know most models are young females.
Many artists, including myself, wish to draw as many different bodies — women and men, young and old, of all skin colors. So, we asked the organizer of the croquis session to bring in some male models, older ones, etc.
Alas, we found out that the problem lies with the “supply side” — the model agencies here have mostly young female models, with the other categories way smaller in number!
Why???

1月7日も、またクロッキー会がありました。いつもどおり、20分ずつ6ポーズです。ただ、ラッキーなことに、今回はモデルさんが男性でした。

東京でクロッキー会にお行きになる方ならご存知でしょうが、モデルさんのほとんどは若い女性です。
私も含めて多くのアーティストは、いろいろな人体を描きたいのですよ。女、男、若い人、年上の人、いろいろな肌の色 ・・・　だから、クロッキー会の主催者に、数名の参加アーティスト（私も含めて）が、男性も中年の人も、もっと多様なモデルさんに来てもらえないか、お願いしたのですね。
すると、なんとまあ、問題は「供給側」にありました。モデルのエージェンシー自体が、若い女性のモデルさんとばかり契約していて、他のカテゴリーのモデルさんははるかに少ないのです。
なぜ？？？

I’m working on another case of “automatism” — following “Another Planet” shown below on November 18.
You see, an automatism painting can look just “miserable and enigmatic” when it is just begun. As I develop it further, you’ll see something a lot more.

下の11月18日のAnother Planetに続いて、オートマティズムの作品を始めたところです。
ご覧のとおり、オートマティズムの作品は、描き始めにはまったくワケが分からず、駄作に見えることがよくあります。
制作を進めるにつれて、新たな姿が浮かび上がります。

Following the Dec. 17 post below, here is another “2D-in-3D” combination of croquis, with “cut-open windows”.
All the three croquis used were made on December 24, 2017. 20 minutes each.
下の12月17日のものに続けて、「切って開けた窓」のある、クロッキーの「2D-in-3D」組み合わせを。
使っているクロッキーは3点ですが、いずれも20分で、2017年12月24日のものです。

The dyeing showed below on December 24 is now done.
After the final dyes are dry, I have to wash the shirt, dry it, and iron it,
to confirm that the dyes are still “there” after a machine wash, and to
stabilize the dyes with heat.

Shown below is the turtle-collar shirt after a machine wash and ironing.

Well, now I’ll start painting on it —

下の12月24日にお見せしたシャツの染色が、できました。
最後の染料が乾いたら、洗濯して乾かし、アイロンを当てます。
洗濯後も染料がしっかりと残っていることを確認し、アイロンの熱で
染料を固着させるためですね。

下の写真のタートル シャツは、洗濯機で洗濯し、アイロンを当てた後の状態。

では、これからこの上にペイントをしていきます …

I’m working on some new paintings, and here is just a study for one of them.
As you see, in the lower right corner, I initially placed a rose, yet changed to a cluster of grapes, to create some connection with the engraved vine around the big mirror.

ご覧のとおり、右下には最初バラを配したのですが、一房のブドウに変更しています。
大きな鏡の周囲に彫られたブドウと対応させるためですね。

Below, on December 19, I showed you Phase 1 of this shirt dyeing.
Now, here is Phase 2, front.
Maybe some of you think I should have stopped at Phase 1 below, but I want something quite drastic with this particular dyeing work.
Still some more work to do —

下の12月19日では、このシャツ染色のフェーズ１を紹介しました。
本日は、フェーズ２、前面
フェーズ１で止めておくべきだったな、とお思いの方々もいらっしゃるかも。
でも私としては、この染色ではかなり drastic なものを欲しているのですね。
まだ、作業は続きます。

Below, on December 13, I showed you a “white in dark” 20-min croquis I made with a piece of coarse chalk. As you see, the result was blurred outlines between the body and surrounding space.
Here, from December 10, is another “white in dark” croquis, also 20 minutes, but made with a more precise medium — a white chalk pencil.

Maybe, some of you might prefer today’s croquis. Yet in terms of the intention of this experiment, this is too clear-cut. Where are the effects of the blurred outlines of 13th??

Unclear outlines can seem messy and chaotic, but they do create the sense of interaction between an object and space.

下の12月13日、「暗い地に白」の20分クロッキーを紹介しました。粗い白のチョークで描いたものでした。そこでご覧のように、身体と周囲の空間の間の輪郭がぼやけていましたね。
今日のは、12月10日のクロッキー会からのものです。やはり「暗い地に白」で、20分クロッキーなのですが、白チョークの鉛筆で描きました。

人によっては、今日のクロッキーの方がお好きかもしれませんが、この実験の目的からすると、これは明確過ぎます。13日にお見せしたような、あのぼやけた輪郭の効果は、どこに？

輪郭の不明快さは、混乱した感じをもたらしますが、同時に物体と空間の間の相互作用も感じさせます。
