— Is Lifting Me Up II

The pencil croquis below was a 7-min sketch I made some 30 years ago — as you see, it’s coarse, done in only 7 minutes. Still, I love the ennui atmosphere it carries.  So, I have been hoping to develop it into a full-fledged painting.

The painting is still in progress, as shown below.

*  In my “full-fledged” felt-tip marker works (i.e., excluding sketches and esquis), I use  those PITT Artist Pens (R) with “**” or “***” from Faber-Castell alone.

with those carrying “***” 100 years or more.

下の鉛筆のクロッキーは、もう30年ほど前に描いた、7分クロッキーです。ご覧のとおり、7分なので、かなり荒っぽいですね。でも、このアンニュイな気分が気に入っていて、以前からこれを「作品」にしたいと思ってきました。

下に示すその「作品」ですが、まだ制作中です。

The 7-min croquis / 元の7分クロッキー

Shown here are two of the six 20-min croquis (quick drawings) I made at a human croquis session I attended on July 2nd. Nothing much.
You see, even with 20-min croquis, I have got this hang-up of thinking and working on how “light” emerges around the motif. As you know, most painters consider where light comes from and how the motif reflects it, but in my case, I try to depict the light itself —- so, the space surrounding the motif matters.

7月2日も、人体クロッキー会に行ってきました。そこでの6ポーズのうち、2つです。単なるクロッキーです。
ただ、ご覧のように20分クロッキーでも、モチーフの周囲の光まで描こうとする癖が、私にはついてしまいました。
無論、絵を描く人ならほぼだれでも、光がどこからモチーフに当たり、モチーフがそれをどう反射するのかを考えながら描くものですが、私の場合、その光そのものも何とか描こうとする癖があるわけですね。ですから、モチーフの周囲の空間も大切になります。

One day, I found a new breed of eustoma at a neighborhood florist’s.
I took it home and put it in my vase, and certainly noticed how flowers change the visual space surrounding them —-
So, here in this experiment, I had no intention at all to describe how the flowers were — rather, I focused on what flowers can do to the visual space around them.

ある日、近所のお花屋さんで、ユーストマ（トルコキキョウ）の新種を見つけました。
買って帰り、自室の花瓶に入れると、花の周囲の視覚空間が大きく変質しました。
そんなわけで、この実験では、花の様子をdescribeする意図は全くありません。
そうではなく、花が周囲の視覚空間に及ぼす効果に着目しています。

The message on the back: “Go Nuke, Go Broke” — just think of what is happening to Toshiba, Areva, etc. The nuclear power business has proven to be a leviathan money loser!

単純に、東芝やAREVAが今どうなっているかを、ご存知ですよね？原発ビジネスは、巨大な赤い字ビジネスであることが、今や明確になっています。

I’ll show you this sample as worn by a torso, later.

This is a very old booklet I designed way back in 1987 — I found it in the back of a book shelf!
Though three decades old, I myself still like the designs, and so do many of my artist / designer friends. So, I’ve decided to show it to you here.

Honestly, I myself do not like gender stereo types. If a woman wants to wear a silver-on-black shirt with “Nuke-Free World” written on it with sharp edges, she should. If a man prefers a pink T-shirt with round “Nuke-Free World” on it, he has all the right to walk around in it.

Still, some people inquired me saying, “Don’t you have any ‘feminine’ versions of the anti-nuke shirts??” Man, when it comes to clothes, some gender stereotypes still persist —

Anyway, I worked on a “supposedly feminine” version of “Nuke-Free World” shirts.
The photos below show the process up to the dyeing. The lower two photos show the shirt right after the dyeing, when the colors were still very vivid. As the dyes dry, the colors “calm down.” I’ll show you the finished shirt when it is ready.

正直なところ、私自身はジェンダー ステレオタイプというものを好みません。”Nuke-Free World” とハードエッジで書いた黒の上にシルバーのシャツを女性が着たければ着ればよいのですし、男性がピンクに丸っぽい”Nuke-Free World” のTシャツが好みなら、それを着て歩けばよいのです。

しかし。「もっと ”フェミニンな” “Nuke-Free World” シャツはないの？」というお問い合わせがあったりします。どうも服という世界では、まだジェンダー ステレオタイプが強く残っているようでして～～

そんなわけで、「たぶん、もう少しフェミニンな」 “Nuke-Free World” シャツを作ってみます。下の写真では、染めの終わりまでを示します。下の写真では染めた直後を示しているので、色彩がかなり強いですね。乾燥するにつれ、色も落ち着いてきます。完成したら、完成作をまた後日投稿しますね。

Way below on May 18, I showed you the first phase of an oil-on-paper, “Quartet”. Some progress since then.
This depiction of my impression of a stage performance of a quartet named “Wooz” (烏頭) should take many more days to complete, since I am applying a layer of oil paint over another, over and over again.
