Just a 20-min croquis experiment / 単に、20分クロッキーでの実験です

I joined a croquis session again on Feb. 9. As usual, 20 minutes x 6 poses.

The model, a Caucasian male, carried some atmosphere of introspection —
somehow attracting the space around him into his inside.

I tried to depict this “intro-attraction” with a pencil.
I’m not sure if I succeeded.

Whether successful or not, I love trying to depict “invisible factors”
in a visible image.

2月9日も、いつものクロッキー会に行ってきました。20分ずつで６ポーズでした。

今回のモデルさんはコーカソイドの男性で、非常に内省的な雰囲気をお持ちでした。
なにか、周囲の空間を自分の中に引きこむような ～～

その「引き込むような内省」を、鉛筆で表そうと努めたのです。
うまくできたかどうか、分かりません。

うまく表せていても、いなくても、とにかく私はこうした「目に見えない要素」を
目に見える画像に取り込もうとするのが好きなのですね。

Actually, this painting went through Stages 3 and 4 in its making.
Yet allow me to skip them, since I wouldn’t want to post similar
images with small changes in sequence here.

This is the final. It is done.
I imagined a giant angel carefully carrying our planet,
which is very fragile —

While working on the current “four-piece suite” of “Angels of the Elements”,
I’m making thumbnails for my next “suite” as well.

Titled “Flowers of Hours”, the coming suite is to consist of four pieces:
Flowers of the Dawn
Flowers of the Day
Flowers of the Sunset
Flowers of the Night

“Angel of Earth”, Stage 2 / （地の天使）、ステージ２

So, here is Stage 2 of “Angel of Earth”, Piece 3 of the four-piece Suite,
“Angels of the Elements”.

You see, if you compare this with “just begun” shown just below,
a painter can apply multiple layers of oil pastel over the same “support”
(paper, paper board, canvas, etc.), as she/he often does with
soft pastel, oil paint, acrylics, etc.

Oil pastel, you see, is NOT a “kindergarten medium.” It’s something
an artist can use seriously.

Of course, oil pastel is a “clumsy, imprecise, often coarse” medium,
which often results in “childish” works.
Yet the painter can utilize this “childishness”, just as I am trying to do
in this four-piece Suite. (You know, IF I came up with some
seemingly “realistic” depictions of the angels of the four elements
in this 21st century, who would ever take them seriously??)
Thus, oil pastel is a good medium for fantasy paintings.

“Angel of Earth”（地の天使）のステージ2です。
4連作 “Angels of the Elements”（4元素の天使たち）のピース3です。

これを、すぐ下の「描き始め」と比べてくだされば、オイルパステルでも
複数の層を塗り重ねることができるのだとお分かりでしょう。ソフトパステルや
油絵具、アクリル絵の具などでやるように。

ですから、オイルパステルは決して「幼稚園向けの」画材ではありません。
アーティストがまじめに使用できる画材なのです。

無論、オイルパステルは「不器用で、正確には描けず、細部の描写がしにくい」
画材ではあります。そのため、オイルパステル画は「子供っぽい」感じになる場合が
多いのですね。
しかし、この「子供っぽさ」を利用することもできます。この4連作でも、私はそう
努めております。（4大元素の天使たちを、「現実らしく」描写したとして、
この21世紀の社会で、だれが真面目に受け取るでしょうか？？）
こんなわけで、オイルパステルはファンタシー系の絵画には適した
画材だと考えています。

So, on with the four-piece suite “Angels of the Elements” —
here is Piece 3, “Angel of Earth”, just begun.

This is only the beginning. I have to work on it more and more.

I imagined a gigantic angel carrying our planet as something
fragile. Maybe we, humans, should be more aware of this fragility —

こちらはピース3、「Angel of Earth」（地の天使）。

まだ描き始めたところです。これから、かなり作業を重ねないと。

巨大な天使が、地球を壊れやすいものとして運ぶところを想像していました。
ことによると、我々人類はこの惑星の壊れやすさをもっと認識すべきなのかも。

“KENT” paper experiment / KENT紙での実験

Honestly, I took up wax pastel (crayon) rather recently, and
have been giving my attention to how to use it. (You know,
commonly it is considered as a “kindergarten medium” and
“nothing professional”.)
I did not pay due attention to the “supports” of wax pastel paintings
— usually, paper!

So, I experimented with a different paper, this time a brand named “KENT”,
which has a very smooth surface. I drew something similar to the
100-min exercise of Jan. 26 below.

The resulting difference is obvious, as you see in the image here.
A smoother surface results in more “cohesive” colors, while
a more coarse one invites more rough, uneven colors.

So, I’ll be more careful with the paper surface I use!

正直なところ、私がワックスパステル（クレヨン）という画材を使い始めたのは
比較的最近のことで、その使い方に関心がありました。（なにせ、
クレヨンというと「幼稚園の画材」と広く認識されていて、プロの画材とは
見なされていませんのでね）
そのため私は、クレヨン画の「支持体」つまり多くの場合には「紙」には、
これまで充分な注意を払ってきませんでした。

そこで、実験です。今回は、「KENT」というブランド名の紙を
使ってみました。表面がツルツルの紙ですね。下の1月26日のものと
似たような画面を描いてみました。

結果、違いは明らかですよね。ここの画像にある通りです。
滑らかな表面だと色の均一性・密着度が高くなりますし、デコボコのある
表面では色彩もムラが生じます。

今後は、使う紙の質にももっと注意することにします。

Just a 100-min drawing exercise / 単なる、100分間でのデッサン練習です

On January 26, I joined another 100-minute drawing session.

With a pose like this, many artists focus on the waist curve of
the model. Yes, it is beautiful.
Yet in my case, an imagination of “the model gazing at something far away”
catches me — just like this!

I know I should have moved the “V-shaped light” to the right.
I had no time to do it, within the given 100 minutes.
To get this wax pastel drawing “really done”, I’d need another 100 minutes.
After all, this was a limited-time exercise.

１月２６日、また100分デッサン会に行ってきました。

こういうポーズですと、腰からお尻にかけての曲線に着目する
アーティストが多いものです。確かに、きれいな曲線ですよね。
でも私の場合、「モデルさんが、ずっとあちらにある何かを凝視している」と
いう想像が強烈になるのですよ。それで、こうしたデッサンになります。

中央の「V字型の光」を、もう少し右に移すべきでしたね。
100分間の中では、そうした修正ができませんでした。
このワックスパステルのデッサンを「ほんとに完成させる」には、
もう100分ほどかかるでしょう。
あくまでこれは、制限時間の中での練習なのでした。

“Curved Sky”, early development / 描き込みの始まり

Below on January 18, I showed the beginning of this
“Curved Sky”.
I’ve begun developing it further.

Actually, the first inspiration for this painting came
when I was standing beside a pond largely covered with reeds.
An aircraft was cutting across the blue sky, which to me
made the sky look like “curved”.

So, I made a quick sketch of the scene and considered
what to do — for a year or so. Many thumbnails and
scratches behind this.

下の1月18日、この”Curved Sky”（曲がった空）の描き始めを
紹介しました。
同作の描き込みを始めました。

もともと、本作のインスピレーションはアシにほぼ覆われた池のほとりに
佇んでいた時に得たものです。
飛行機が青空を横切っていて、そのため私には空が「曲がっている」ように
見えたのですね。

そこで急いでラフなスケッチをし、何をどう描くかを長期間にわたり
考えました。1年ほど考えました。この画像の背後には、多数の
スケッチやサムネールがあるわけですね。
