So, this portrait of the saint is still in progress.
Allow me to skip Stage 6, and here is Stage 7.

I wanted to present the saint facing many tragedies of
our world and is about to speak up.
Speak, St. Francis!!

120-min drawing / 120分のデッサン

Today, September 16, I joined a drawing session.
Unlike my croquis sessions, today we worked on the same model’s
same pose for 120 minutes.

The model carried a pure, untainted yet friendly atmosphere (not “angelic but
inaccessible”), so I tried to depict some sense of purity with warmth.

I hope you see some “purity and warmth” in this.

After the drawing, another painter present asked me what medium
I was working on. Of course, I said “wax pastel, i.e., kindergarten crayon.”
She found the color mixes of this drawing beautiful.
She, for her part, was working with watercolor, a medium not of my kind.
Watercolor requires skillfulness of the artist, and that’s something missing in me.
(So, I prefer the “direct simplicity” of pastels.)
I honestly said to her, “Hey, you are good with watercolor. You give me green eyes.”

本日9月16日、デッサン会に行ってきました。
クロッキー会とは違って、120分間描きます。

今日のモデルさんには、汚れないピュアな雰囲気があったのですが、
そのくせフレンドリーで、「天使のようで、近づきがたい」という感じじゃ
ありませんでした。そこで、ピュアにしてしかも暖かい感じを
出そうと努めました。

「ピュアだけど、暖か」な感じが、皆様にも伝わっていますでしょうか？

デッサン会の後で、その場に居合わせたあるアーティストの方が、
私の使っていた画材は何かと尋ねてこられました。
もちろん、「ワックスパステル、要するに幼稚園で使うクレヨンですよ」と
応えておきました。
そのアーティストの方は、私のデッサンの混色が「きれい」で、気に入られたようです。
彼女自身は水彩をお使いでした。私は水彩が苦手なんですね。かなり器用さが
要求される画材なので。不器用な私には、パステル類などの方が向いています。
そこで正直に、「水彩がお上手な方って、私のような不器用なものから見ると羨ましい
ですよ」と申し上げておきました。

“Cosmos Field”, just begun / 描き始め

Felt-tip markers can be a good painting medium, when it
comes to pointillism on paper.
IF you simply draw lines with them, well, markers are quite limited in
expressions, but pointillism can make more of their ink colors (especially,
their transparency), IF you have markers with quality pigments.

I’m going to do a cosmos field with such markers.

* How durable is the ink??

In my paintings of felt-tip marker pointillism for sale, I use those PITT Artist Pens with “**” or “***” from Faber-Castell alone.
The manufacturer claims that the ink of PITT Artist Pens with “**” lasts 25 years or longer,
with those carrying “***” 100 years or more.

紙に点描という描き方をする場合には、マーカーも良い画材になり得ます。
マーカーで単純に線を描いてしまうと、その表現は極めて限られるのですが。
点描なら、マーカーのインクの特性を引き出せます。特に、その透明性ですね。
ただし、高品質のインクのマーカーが必要ですが。

そうしたマーカーで、コスモスのフィールドを描こうと思います。

“Lycoris radiata” — initial sketch. The work has just begun / 下絵。これから制作です

Obviously, this is a sketch for a new painting.
I’m going to work on “Lycoris radiata”, a very common roadside flower
of September over here in Tokyo.

In most of Japan, this flower is not loved by many, since
— it’s toxic
— it’s blossom falls on “higan” or Japan’s traditional counterpart of Halloween
(quite roughly speaking) and therefore reminds people of the dead

Hey, do we have to look at other species, who share our planet,
with lenses determined by some human cultural biases??

So, I am trying to treat this plant as something
“burning and radiant.”

言うまでもなく、新しい作品のための下絵です。
これから、”Lycoris radiata”（ヒガンバナ） の制作を始めるわけです。
東京では、9月に道端に咲く花として、どこでも見かけますね。

日本列島の大半では、ヒガンバナは多くの人からは好まれていませんよね。
なにせ、
・・ 有毒植物
・・ 「お彼岸」のころに咲くので、死者を連想させる
ことですからね。

けど。我々は、同じ地球に暮らす他種族を見るとき、
人間の文化集団による偏ったレンズを通してしか、
見られないのでしょうか？

そこで私は、ヒガンバナを「彼岸花」としてではなく、
Lycoris radiataとして、「炎を発散するリコリス」として
描くことにしました。

無論、本日紹介しているのは、下絵です。これから、制作を始めます。

“Lines only” experiment in 20 minutes / 20分での「線だけ」実験

On September 8th, I joined a croquis (quick drawing) session again.
As usual, 20 minutes x 6 poses.

This is an inevitable issue in croquis, by its very definition —
— after all, thick (oil pastel, etc.) or thin (pencils, ball-point pens, etc.),
lines are basically what you make on paper, unless you use a medium
like soft pastel, when you are at work on croquis.
Of course, you can, say, “spread” pencil lines with your fingertips
after drawing them, but this is a sort of after-treatment.

This plain fact makes me think “What can I do with lines only, in
just 20 minutes, without any after-treatment??”

I struggled with this issue.
I just don’t know whether you find this “just a scratch”
or “an experiment with struggles,” but anyway I
had a hard time depicting “space with lines only.”

9月8日も、クロッキー（速写画）会に行ってきました。
いつもどおり、20分 x 6ポーズです。

クロッキーという行為の定義上、避けられない問題なのですが、
要するに描けるものは基本的に線だけです。それが太い線（オイルパステルなど）
なのか、細い線（鉛筆やボールペンなど）なのかは別にして。
ソフトパステルでも使わない限り、描けるのは基本的に線だけです。
もちろん、鉛筆で線を描いてから指先でこすって「広げる」ことは
できますが、これは「線の後処理」ですよね。

そこで、ある問題を意識することになります：
「一切の後処理なしで、線だけで20分間で、何ができるのか？」

この問題に取り組みました。
はたして、ご覧になるあなたが これを
「単なるグシャグシャ」と思われるか、それとも
「苦労した実験だなあ」と見てくださるか、
私には分かりませんが、とにかく私としては、
「空間を線だけで表す」のに苦しみました。

So, “Rose of Sharon” is done.

As I said below, this is meant to be coarse and wild,
since I intended to represent the plant’s vital force —
standing straight under the scorching sun, it also
provides nectar to bees and ants.

So, this is coarse and “full of life”, I hope.

下でも既に申し上げたように、これは荒っぽくワイルドな感じを
目指しました。
ムクゲという植物は、強力な生命力があるようで、焼けつくような
真夏の太陽光の下ですくっと立ち続け、ハチやアリたちにまで
蜜を与える生命力を何とか表したかったのですね。

それを感じ取っていただければ、うれしいです。

So, this painting is still in progress.
Here’s some progress from August 25 shown below.
The work still goes on — as you see, here I am
working in a very old way of oil painting —
a thin layer of paint on an existing one which was applied
on yet another.
This takes time and the resulting colors have one-of-a-kind
color depth, which I want in this meditative work.

Rose of Sharon, still in progress / まだ制作進行中

Some progress from August 28 below —
As I said way below on August 22, I wanted to present the vital force
of the plant, which stands firm and straight under the killing sun of Tokyo’s summer while giving nectar to ants and bees.
So, I want my rose of Sharon to be tough and wild, even to the point of some coarseness,
rather than elegant and gentle.

下の8月28日から、いくらか進みました。
さらに下の8月22日にも申しましたように、東京の危険な真夏の暑さの
中ですくっと立ちハチやアリに蜜を与える、ムクゲの生命力を
表したかったのです。
ですからこのムクゲはエレガントで優しそうな花にせず、
丈夫でワイルド、ことによると荒々しささえ備えたものにしたいのですね。

This is a further development of “Prosperity Gospel”, whose sketch
I showed below on August 24.

It’s still in progress, and I think it’ll be done soon.

As I said on Aug. 24, this is a protest painting against the prosperity gospel,
which I think does not deserve the name “Gospel” — if God blesses
you with wealth and success, it is meant for you to share with
those in need!!

下の8月24日に下絵を示した  “Prosperity Gospel” が、いくらか進みました。

まだ制作進行中です。近いうちに、完成しそうです。

下の8月24日にも申し上げましたが、本作は
prosperity gospel という、北米などで問題になっている
キリスト教の歪曲に対するプロテストです。
誰かが富や成功を神から頂いたなら、それは困っている人々を
助けるために頂いたものですよね。
ところがprosperity gospelという歪曲では、富や成功そのものが
目的化してしまっているんですね。
