“Rose of Sharon” At last, I’ve come up with a sketch I like. / （ムクゲ） ようやく、自分で気に入った下絵が出来ました

After some struggles with sketches of a rose of Sharon,
at last, I have come up with one I like.

Here it is. As I said below on August 22, I have been struggling to
present the vital force of the plant, which stands firm and straight
under the killing sun of Tokyo’s summer while giving nectar to
ants and bees.

ムクゲを描こうとしてかなり苦闘しましたが、ようやく気に入った下絵が出来ました！

ご覧のとおりです。下の8月22日に申しあげたように、ムクゲの生命力を
描こうと苦闘したわけですね。
真夏の東京の太陽は危険なまでに暑いのですが、そのただ中にすくっと
立ち、アリやハチに蜜を与える生命力を。

So, here is a further development from August 20 below.
“St. Francis” in oil on tempera on paper board.

Again, there are light reflections on the saint’s right cheek and left eye.
I adjusted the light positions, but I could not erase the reflections.

Still, I hope you find this painting “meditative” — something that
invites you to meditation.

やはり、照明の位置を調整はしたのですが、どこかにライトの反射が出てしまいますね。
ここでは、聖人の右頬と左目に光の反射が出ています。

絵画の意図は、「瞑想」。
ご覧になっている方々も瞑想に引き込まれていくことを、願っています。

Another protest painting — this time, against the “prosperity gospel”!
In fact, it is not worthy of the name “Gospel” — as many of you know
very well if God blesses you with wealth and success, it is not meant
for you to savor with luxury cars and a beautiful mansion, but to
help the poor and oppressed!!

Shown here is the initial sketch, so I guess it is hard to see what the
picture is all about.
As I progress, I think the picture’s protest becomes clearer and
more straightforward.

そして、新たなプロテスト絵画。
今回は、prosperity gospel というキリスト教の歪曲に
対するプロテストです。
キリスト教徒が総人口の6%程度に過ぎない（Gallup社の調査による）
日本では、prosperity gospel といっても知る人は少ないでしょうが、
北米や韓国、アフリカなどでは結構社会的に悪名高くなっています。
要するに、「社会的成功や財産も神の祝福なのだ、だからそれを
神に求めるべきだ」といったような歪曲です。
本来キリスト教では、だれかが富を得た場合、その人やその家族が
独り占めして満悦するために神から与えられているんじゃ、ありません！
貧しい人たちや弾圧されている方々を支援するために、富を与えられて
いるんです。

このプロテスト絵画は、そうした prosperity gospel という歪曲に
対するプロテストです。

今回紹介している画像は、まだ描き始めのスケッチ（下絵）なので、
パッと見て訳が分からないと思います。
制作が進むにつれて、分かりやすく明確になると思います。

Another failure sketch of roses of Sharon / ムクゲのスケッチ、失敗例、もう１つ

So, after the two failures showed below on August 16,
I am still struggling with how to present the vital force of roses of Sharon,
which are standing tall under the killing sunlight of Tokyo’s summer
while providing nectar to bees and ants.

Here is another failure from that struggle —
When I come up with something I like, I’ll show that here.

下の8月16日、ムクゲの生命力を描こうとして失敗したスケッチを2例、紹介しました。
いまだに、苦闘しております。
東京の真夏の危険な暑さの中ですくっと立ち、ハチやアリに蜜を与える
生命力ですね。

本日お見せしているのも、失敗スケッチです。
気に入ったスケッチが出来たら、また紹介しますね。

So, here is a development from August 10 below — “St. Francis” in oil on paper board.

As you see, there are light reflections on the saint’s cheeks — I tried
some other lighting angles, but some reflections remained. Sorry for this.
After all, I’m a painter and not a photographer.

I hope you already see that my intention in this particular painting is to
present a face of meditation, and invite viewers into meditation as well.

Of course, as I said before, this is inspired by Alexej von Jawlensky,
one of the historic painters I admire.

ご覧のとおり、聖人の両側の頬のあたりで光が反射していますね。
光源の位置をあれこれ変えて見たりしたのですが、反射が消えてくれません。
やはり私は絵描きであって、写真家ではないので、ご了承くださいませ。

本作での私の意図は、たぶん既にご覧になれると思います。
瞑想の顔を提示することで、見る方々をも瞑想にいざなうということですね。

もちろん、以前にも申しましたように、私が尊敬する歴史上の画家のひとり、
Alexej von Jawlensky の作品からインスパイアーされています。

Today, on August 18, I joined in another drawing session. 100 minutes of the same pose.

As you see, I drew the eyes larger than life. Why?
Well, the model chose to face straight at me. You know, it is tough to draw a model
facing straight at you. The workshop was packed — no empty seat left — so I had
no other choice but to draw her “right in front.”

So, the resulting drawing should have the model staring straight at the viewer.
In a case like this, making the model’s eyes larger than life staring straight at the
viewer makes the drawing quite impactful.

本日8月18日も、デッサン会に行ってきました。同じポーズを100分間です。

ご覧のとおり、両眼を実際よりも大きく描きました。何のために？？
モデルさんが、私に面と向かう位置を選んだのですね。ご存じのとおり、
真正面のモデルさんというのは、描きにくいものです。ところがアトリエの中は
定員いっぱいで、空きスペースはありません。
ですから、真正面のモデルさんを描くしか、選択はなかったわけです。

すると当然、出来上がるデッサンは、モデルさんが鑑賞者を
まっすぐに見つめるものになります。
そうした場合、目をしっかりと、実物より大きめに描くと、その両眼が
鑑賞者を見つめるので、インパクトがありますよね。

Honestly, flowers are not a motif I am well experienced with — you know,
many “floral painters” focus on the motif’s gracefulness, while I pay my
attention to the ”vital force” of flowers.

Now, we are having a summer of life-threatening heat and humidity this year
(2019), and at least 45 lives were claimed by heatstroke inside Tokyo alone,
during the first seve3n days of this August only, according to the news.

In my neighborhood, inside the “23 Wards” of Tokyo, I often find roses of Sharon
standing straight and firm under the killing sun. I see many bees and ants
feeding on the flowers’ nectar. So, the “roses” are in full blossom while
providing life to some other creatures.

I wanted to paint this vital force, rather than just beauty, of
the rose of Sharon.
So, I tried several sketches, including the two shown here,
to depict the flower’s life force.

Alas, I didn’t like any of them. These are lovely flowers and
they distract my attention to their beauty, away from their
“vita.”  <“(>_< ;;)

I am still struggling, working on some new sketches of the flower.
When I finally come up with something I like, I’ll show the sketch here.

正直に申し上げて、私は花というモチーフにはあまり馴染んでおりません。
ご存知のとおり、多くの画家の皆さんは花を描くとき、その麗しさに着目します。
それに対して私は、花の生命力に注目します。

で、今年（2019年）、東京では危険な暑さと湿度が続いております。
この8月の最初の7日間だけで、東京だけで最低でも45名の人命が熱中症で奪われた
とニュースでは告げています。

23区内にある私の近所でも、よくムクゲの花を見かけます。危険な太陽光を浴びながらでも、
すくっと立っています。見ていると、多数のアリたちやハチたちが花を蜜を吸いに集まっています。
ムクゲは、他の生物の生命を助けながら、咲き誇っているわけですね。

その、ムクゲの生命力を描きたかったのですね。単に「きれいなお花」というんじゃなくて。
そこで何枚かスケッチを描いてみました。そのうちの2つをここに示しています。

やれやれ、いずれのスケッチも気に入りません。
ムクゲというのは確かに麗しい花なので、それに目を奪われます。
しかし、「きれいなお花」としてではなく、あくまでその生命力を
描きたい ・・・   <“(>_< ;;)

まだ、アレコレ考えながら、ムクゲのスケッチ（下絵）に取り組んでおります。
気に入ったものが出来たら、ここで紹介しますね。

20-min croquis experiment / 20分クロッキーでの実験

Another croquis from the August 11 croquis (quick drawing) session —
Of the six poses in all, the first three I drew in a “mediocre” style —
just like the one I showed just below on August 12.
Now, with the last three poses, I experimented, as you see here.

No object can exist without some “space” to accommodate it.
(contrary to the Newtonian physics)
And an object’s gravity “bends” the space around it.
Thus, objects and the space around them interact.

I am experimenting based on this recognition of space-object interaction,
in my croquis experiments, at least for now.

Here, a single human body exists in four adjacent different spaces —
so my imagination worked.

これも、同じく8月11日のクロッキー（速写画）会から。
1回のクロッキー会では6ポーズあるのですが、最初の3ポーズでは、すぐ下の
8月12日にお見せしたような「ありふれた」スタイルで描きました。
残る後半の3ポーズでは、ここに紹介しているような実験を行いました。

何らかの空間がなければ、どのような物体も存在しません。
（ニュートン力学の認識とは、異なりますね）
さらに、物体の重力が周囲の空間を「曲げる」のですよね。
そのように、物体とその周囲の空間とは、相互作用を及ぼしあいます。

そうした、空間と物体の間の相互作用を前提に、クロッキー会での実験を試みております。
少なくても今のところは。

ここでは、1つの身体が4つの隣接しあう異なる空間に存在していたら？？
という想像に基づいて、実験をしました。

20-min croquis — “writing on the wall”?? / 20分クロッキー、「突如現れたメッセージ｝??

I joined another croquis (quick drawing) session on August 11.
As usual, 20 minutes x 6 poses.
Again, I tried a “common” style, as shown above, for the first three poses.
Then, I switched to an experiment, which I’ll show you next time.

So, here is one from the “mediocre” three.
Still, thanks to the model’s pose, which creates an impression of “looking away”,
this one carries the sense of “something happening out there.”
Besides, I coincidentally wrote a quick note on the back of the paper,
which luckily looks like the focus of the model’s attention in this scanned image.

The “note on the back” now looks like a “writing on the wall” —
yet unlike that of Daniel 5:5, the “writing” in this 20-min croquis
seems to be a happy one.

8月11日もまた、クロッキー（速写画）会に行ってきました。
いつもどおり、20分 x 6ポーズです。
今回も、最初の3ポーズは「ありふれたクロッキー」にして、残る3ポーズで
スタイルを変え、実験を試みました。その実験的な方は、次回に紹介します。

というわけで、今回は「ありふれた3枚」の中から1つ。
ありふれていますが、モデルさんのポーズが「あちらを向いている」→
「あちらに何かある」という感じを醸し出すものだったので、想像力を刺激してくれると思います。
しかも、これはまったくの偶然なのですが、私が紙の裏面に短いメモを
書いて、それがこのスキャン画像では、ちょうどモデルさんの関心の焦点に位置しています。

この「裏のメモ」がまるで、「壁に突如現れたメッセージ」のように見えますよね？
ただ、（ユダヤ教聖書の）ダニエル書５：５にある「壁に表れたメッセージ」とは
違って、このクロッキーでは何か好ましいメッセージのようです。
