“Cosmos Field”, done / 完成

Well, I think I can finish this off now.

As I said below, I wanted to bring back the
connection between κοσμοs (Greek for “the universe as an ordered whole”)
and the name of this flower.
I hope this painting makes you feel it.

manufacturer claims the markers’ ink I used is durable

これで、完成として良いでしょう。

下でも述べたように、この作品での私の狙いは、
「コスモス」という名称とギリシャ語の κοσμοs （秩序ある統一体としての宇宙）
との関連を取り戻すことにありました。
その関連性を、感じていただけるでしょうか？

“Straight lines only” experiment in 20 minutes / ２０分での、『まっすぐな線だけの実験』

At the croquis session of October 6, as usual 20 minutes x 6 poses,
I first tried “partial pointillism” as I mentioned below on September 24.
In short, due to the time restriction of 20 minutes, I worked with a pencil and
wax pastel first and then applied marker pointillism partially.

Alas, as shown below, even “partial” application of pointillism required
some more time than 20 minutes. So, the result was a miserable failure,
as shown.

So, I changed my direction and experimented with “line-ism”,
i.e., drew with marker lines, as shown in the other image below.
Though this image is just a case of try-and-error, I found a new direction
in working with markers while trying it.

That “new direction” is shown above — notice that this croquis consists of
“hand-drawn straight lines only”.

10月6日も、いつものように20分 x 6ポーズのクロッキー会がありました。
１ポーズ目では「部分的に点描」を試みました。下の９月２４日に言及した通りです。
つまり、２０分という制約の中で、まず鉛筆とワックスパステルで描き、
そこに部分的にマーカーの点描を加えようとしたのです。

おやま、「部分的」であっても点描の効果を２０分では出せず、下にあるように大失敗に終わりました。部分的点描でも、もっと時間が必要ですね。

そこで方向を変更し、「ライン イズム」（線描）とでも呼べばよい描き方に
切り替えました。これも、下の画像に示してあります。
この画像自体はあくまで「トライ アンド エラー」に過ぎませんが、これをやってるうちに
マーカーでの新しい方向を発見しました。

その新しい方向が、上の画像です。
要するに２０分クロッキーですが、「手で描いたまっすぐな線だけ」で
構成されていることにご注意くださいな。

As I said back then, my intention in this painting is to bring back
the connection between the plant and the “cosmos”.

Pointillism is a very slow process, and this Stage 3 might not
look very different from Stage 2. Please look carefully for the difference.

28日にも申しましたように、この絵画の意図としては、
この花と「コスモス」の関係を取り戻すことがあります。

点描というのは大変時間のかかるプロセスなので、ステージ2からの
違いが、分かりにくいかも。注意してご覧くださいませ。

here the same saint looks a bit busy and disturbed.
I wanted to present him looking at tragedies of our world
and about to speak up.
When he does, what is he going to say???

Below on September 13, I showed the start of this painting.
Here is Stage 2.

The Greek origin of the word “cosmos” was κοσμοs, which meant
“the world as something in ordered unity” — thus, it was the
etymological origin of words like “cosmetics”, “cosmic”, etc.

My intention in this painting is to bring back this connection
between the flower and the “cosmos”.

“Lycoris radiata” started over / やり直しの描き始め

Below on September 20, I showed a failure in my presentation of
“Lycoris radiata”.

I started the work over, and here is how it began.
My intention is still the same as I said further below on September 11:
to treat Lycoris radiata as “something burning and radiant”.

下の9月20日に、Lycoris radiata（ヒガンバナ）の失敗例を
紹介しました。

そこで初めからやり直したものを、本日は紹介します。
私の意図は、さらに下の9月11日に申しあげたところと変わっておらず、
Lycoris radiataを「燃える、輝く花」として描くことにあります。

So, as I confirmed below on September 22, 20 minutes are too short for pointillism,
even if the paper size is very small.
I thought about this issue and came up with a possible solution —
I’ll try painting large areas with another medium, and then
apply pointillism partially.

To find out how different media react with marker points,
on the two croquis shown on September 22, I tried two media:
— Wax pastel (crayon), and
— Watercolor

The results:
— Marker points work and remain fine with wax pastel.
— Watercolor slurs marker points, as I expected.

So, in my next 20-min croquis session, I’ll try partial pointillism
on wax pastel.

下の9月22日で確かめたように、点描で描くには20分は短すぎます。
たとえかなり小さな用紙であっても。
この「20分点描問題」を考え、ソリューションになるかもしれない方策を
試してみます。
つまり、大きな部分を別の画材で塗り、部分的に点描を施すわけです。

そこで、他の画材がマーカーの「点」とどう反応するかを試すため、
下の9月22日の2つのクロッキーに、次の2種類の画材を塗ってみました。
● ワックスパステル（クレヨン）
● 水彩

その結果：
● ワックスパステルの上にマーカーで点を打っていけますし、にじんだりしません。
● 水彩をかけると、予想通りマーカーの点がにじんでしまいます。

ですから次回の20分クロッキー会では、ワックスパステルの上に
部分的に点描を試してみます。

I joined in another croquis session today — as usual, 20 minutes x 6 poses.
Today, I experimented with felt-tip marker pointillism — I tried how much
I could work in pointillism in 20 minutes, using a small sketchbook (277 x 215mm
or 11″ x 8.5″).

Alas, pointillism is exhaustively time-consuming. Even with a small sheet
like this, all I could do in just 20 minutes was so limited as shown here.

Now, by my next 20-min croquis session, I’ll have to think about how to do
pointillism in 20 minutes!!

やれやれ、点描というのはあまりに時間を要する描法ですね。
これだけ小さな用紙を使っても、20分だとここまでしか
できませんでした。

次回の20分クロッキー会までに、20分で点描をどうやるのか、考えて
おかないといけませんね。
