A sequel to “Object in Space” below —
Two more from the 20-minute x 6-pose croquis session of November 12.

Though it is quite coarse thanks to the time limit of 20 minutes, the “traditional” one (above) does depict some shadows of the body. Needless to say, these shadows indicate there is a floor just beneath the model. And at drawing classes, many are often told to make some shadows to suggest the floor. Of course, such shadows make the 3D depiction clearer.
Now, if shadows have to be drawn to suggest the floor in the “background,” which is supposed be “empty space,” why does the “space” just beneath the body have to be a “floor,” while the rest of the surrounding space is supposed to be “empty”??

After all, is there such a thing as “empty space”?? What seems to be empty space is actually penetrated by magnetic and gravitational fields. And all the matter of our universe was created ex nihilo.

Then, why not draw an object and the space surrounding it as a sort of unity??

やはり11月12日の20分 X 6ポーズのクロッキー会から、もう2点

下の2点のうちの上側のクロッキーは、20分という時間制約のため大変荒っぽいですが、「伝統的な」描き方で、体のすぐ下には影があります。言うまでもなく、そこに床があることが分かりますね。デッサン教室などでは、こうした影を描くよう指導されることが多いのです。それによって、もちろん、立体感も明確になります。
でも、「背景」は「何もない空間」であるのに、わざわざ床を描くというこは、体のすぐ下の空間だけは「床」であって、空虚な空間という扱いとは違うことになりますよね。

いったい、「空虚な空間」なんてものは、実在するのでしょうか？実際には空間には、磁場や重力場が溢れているのでは？さらにこの宇宙のすべての物質は、無から想像されたものでは？

だったら、物体とその周辺の空間とを、一体化して描いても良いのでは？

On November 12, I joined in a 20-min x 6-pose croquis session again.
Here are two from the six.

As you can tell, the “conventional” croquis has the model (subject) against the “negative space (empty background),” while the one below has the subject and the surrounding space as a single unity.
This is my recognition of this material world — matter was created “ex nihilo” (out of nothing), as many physicists today claim. Then, seemingly “empty” space is not just empty but actually the mother (Note “materia” is derivative of “mater”) of matter.
Thus, one thing I’m trying to achieve in painting is to unite a subject matter (motif) and the space around it.

11月12日も、20分 X 6ポーズの人体クロッキー会に参加しました。
そこから、2点。

ご覧のとおり、「従来型」のクロッキーだと、モデル（対象物）を「空白の背景」の上に描きますよね。ところが下のクロッキーでは、周囲の空間と対象物とを一体化しようと試みています。
それが、私のこの物質世界の認識なのですね。物質はex nihilo（無から）想像されたものだと。実際、現代の物理学者の多くが、似たようなことを言っていますね。つまり、一見すると「空虚な」空間は実は空虚なのではなく、物質の母だというわけですね。（ラテン語のmateriaは、materから派生しています）
そんなわけで、今のところ絵画での私の課題の1つは、対象物とその周囲の空間とを一体化することなのです。

Another Planet

Here are two from the 20-min x 6-pose croquis session of Oct. 15.

As you see, the model was a male, something precious at many croquis sessions.
At least here in Tokyo, most of the painting models I’ve seen are young females,
while I wish to draw many different demographic groups.
Alas, as far as I’ve seen them, more than 80% of the models available are women, and more than 90% of both female and male models are in their 20s.
Why??? As you can easily tell, painters need to paint older human bodies,
both men and women, as well.

10月15日のクロッキー会から、2点。いつもどおり、20分ずつ6ポーズでした。

ご覧のとおり、モデルさんは男性でした。貴重です！
少なくてもここ東京では、絵画用のモデルさんのほとんどは若い女性です。
私としては、いろいろ老若男女の人体を描きたいのですがね。
でも現実には、私が見てきた限りでは、人体デッサン会で目にするモデルさんの
80%以上は女性で、さらに男女とも90%以上が２０代の方です。
どなたでもお分かりのとおり、画家は男女問わず歳を重ねた人体も描く必要があり得るのですがねえ。
いったい、なんで若い女性ばかりなのでしょう？？？

Why are there so few male models?? / なんでこんなに、男性のモデルって少ないんだ？？

And why have I never seen any model above 40 in age??? / それと、４０歳以上のモデルさんを見たことがないのは、なんでだよ？？

I’m not a language-oriented person and am often lost for words in describing / explaining my own paintings —
The best phrase I can think of to accompany this painting is
“Whoever is near me is near the fire” (Gospel of Thomas, 82)

私は言語志向の人間ではないので、自分の絵画の描写や説明では、言葉に窮する場合が多いのです。
この絵画に連れ添う言葉として私が思いつく、ベストの言葉は：

I’ve witnessed, too often, language is used to “divide and control” —
I wish my language is always there to help and comfort others.

As I said below on October 19, I resorted to some “automatism” in the earlier phases of this painting, and now I’m trying to give more specific shapes and colors to the outcome of the automatism.
So, I have no idea where this planet is, or what the “towers” are, what the “green ground” really is, or —-

下の10月19日に申しましたように、この作品の初期段階では「オートマティズム」に従いました。
そして今、そのオートマティズムの産物に具体的な形態や色を付けております。
そのため、「この惑星はどこにあるのか？」、「”タワー”のようなものは、いったいなんだ？」、「”緑の地面”は、いったい何なのか？」といったことは、私にもサッパリ分かりません。
