I’m working on clothes dyeing and painting as well — here’s a turtle-neck shirt I’m currently dyeing. This is Phase 1. A lot more dyeing to do.
After I’m satisfied with the dyed shirt, I’ll paint on it.

So, here’s what I did in the experiment mentioned on December 15 below —
First, the three 20-min croquis bound in a single sketchbook, in the order shown below — the standing and seated poses faced each other directly, as shown below.
The remaining one, the lying pose was on the other side of the seated one.
下の12月15日の実験ですが、こういうことをしたのですね。
まず、この3枚のクロッキーの配列ですが、1差鵜のスケッチブックの中で、次のようになっていました ・・・ たちポーズと座りポーズは隣りあわせ。
そして、寝ポーズは座りポーズの背面にありました。

Then, I combined the three pages one on another — Lying – Seated on the back of the Lying – Standing — and folded open the cuts, to obtain a “single 3D combination of three 2D croquis” below.
You see, though we usually think of a sheet of paper as something 2D, but in fact we can turn it into 3D by making cuts in it, folding it, etc.

それから、その3名のクロッキーを重ね合わせました。寝ポーズ － 座りポーズが寝ポーズの裏に － 立ポーズ、という順序です。
そして、切った箇所を降り広げることで、「二次元の画像の三次元の組み合わせ」を実験したわけですね。
紙に描いたものは2次元と見なしやすいのですが、実はあくまで3Dの空間の中に存在しているので、折ったり切ったりすることで、3Dに変えることが可能です。

「物体とその周囲の空間」という問題を考えるとき、我々は3D空間にいることを自覚したいものです。
だからこそ、我々は絵画という2D平面の全貌を見ることができるのですね。
我々がもし2D世界の住民であるのなら、つまりクロッキーの表面に住んでいるのなら、我々が見ることができるのは、外部の3次元世界でそのクロッキーを見ている人物の影だけでしょう。
つまり、どのような2D絵画であっても、実は3D空間内に存在しているわけですね。
なら、この「3次元内の2次元存在」という現実を、利用しても良いのでは？
12月10日、いつものようにクロッキー会がありました。例によって6ポーズで、1ポーズあたり20分です。
そこから、3点。いずれも、「ありふれた」クロッキーですね。
でも、いずれにも奇妙な切れ目が入っています。
そこが「実験」だったのですが、一体何をしたのか？

とりあえずポーズ1では「ありのままに」描き、ポーズ2と3では、調整しました。

ポーズ1．頭が大きく見えますが、「ありのままに」まず描いたものです。数か所に「切れ込み」があることにご注意。
ポーズ2．やはり、紙に切れ込みがあります。
ポーズ3．なお、私は人体を切ることに楽しみはまったく感じておりません！ ここで切っているのは、あくまで「紙」です！ (^O^ ;;;)
Speaking of “an object and space surrounding it”, let’s keep in our mind that we are in 3D space!
That’s why we are able to see the “whole picture” of a 2D painting. Just imagine we are living on a 2D plane — we are part of a croquis surface — then, we would be seeing only some shadows of someone watching the croquis in the 3D space outside.
So, any 2D paintings, though their painted surfaces are certainly 2D, in fact exist in 3D space.
Then, why not take advantage of this 2D-in-3D existence??
So, on December 10th, I tried an experiment of this 2D-in-3D existence. It was the usual croquis session, with 6 poses, 20 minutes each.
Here are three, quite “ordinary” croquis, yet notice some strange “cuts” on them.
So, what did I do with these “cuts”???

* I know Pose 1 looks “head-heavy”, yet I swear that the actual model had a rather large head. So, with Pose 1, I drew her as she was. Then, in Poses 2 and 3, I made adjustments.

Yet another 20-min croquis from November 26 —
As you see, very coarse and inaccurate.
On a black sheet of paper that was not large, I worked with a white piece of chalk,
which is not meant for precision. Moreover, I rubbed the white pigment on the paper with my fingertips.
Why did I choose a medium not meant for precision??
Once again, because I was looking into the relationship between an object and space surrounding it.
You see, this inaccurate white drawing on black looks ghostly, with the borders (outlines) between the object and space blurred. Is an object really an existence cut clear of space?? Maybe it is actually something vibrating with space —

もう１つ、11月26日の20分クロッキーから ・・・
ご覧のとおり、大変荒っぽく、崩れたクロッキーです。
決して大きくない黒い紙の上に、白いチョークで描きました。こうしたチョークは、
細かく正確に描くには不向きです。しかも、指先で白い顔料をこすり、さらにぼやかしました。
そんな不正確な画材を、なぜ私は選んだのでしょうか？
やはり、物体と周囲の空間の関係を探りたいからですね。
ご覧のとおり、この不正確な「黒の上の白」のクロッキーは、どこか幽霊のように見えますね。
輪郭（物体と空間の間の境）が、ぼやけておりますので。
はたして、物体とは本当に、空間からキレイに分離独立した存在なのでしょうか？
それとも、空間とともに共鳴し合って、存在しているものなのか？

So, two new croquis (quick drawings) from November 26 — as usual, we had 6 poses in all, 20 minutes each. Needless to say, just coarse croquis.
Again, I considered the relationship between an object and the space surrounding it.
Below, I assumed there is some “visual resonance” between an object and the space surrounding it. Of course, I know I have to explore and work on such “resonance” a lot more. This is Just a beginning.

11月26日にもクロッキー（速写画）会があって、例によって20分 X 6ポーズでした。
そこから2点。20分クロッキーですから、当然、荒っぽいですが。
相変わらず、物体とその周囲の空間の間の関係を考えています。
下のクロッキーでは、物体とその周囲の空間の間に何らかの「視覚的共鳴」があるものと想定しています。無論、こうした「共鳴」について、今後もっと探究し、試行錯誤しないといけませんね。下にあるのは、単なる始まりです。

Experiment with “resonance” / 「共鳴」の実験
Nothing much — just a quick, coarse sketch of color pencils and oil pastel.
Yesterday, at a local church, I had to quite quickly explain what “Cherub” is, so
I made this very quick drawing according to Chapter 1 of the Book of Ezekiel.
Since photography spread, people usually use photos in explanatory presentations.
Paintings now play some other roles, mostly.
Still, in explaining something like Cherub, which is actually invisible, paintings and
drawings can still play “explanatory” roles.
Of course, today, you can synthesize a “photo of Cherub” with some software,
provided you have all the component photos — a calf’s feet, a man clad in an alb, bird wings, heads of a lion, bull, eagle, and a man, and —- and you are the legal owner of
all those “component photos”!
単に、急いで描いたスケッチです。色鉛筆とオイルパステル。
昨日、近くの教会で「ケルブ」（「ケルビーム」の単数）とは何かを説明する必要があったので、
エゼキエル書の１章に従い、急いでササッと描いたものです。
写真が普及して以来、説明用の画像としては写真が主流になっていますよね。
今では、絵画の演じる役割は、まったく別のものになっていることが多いです。
でも、ケルブのようなものを説明するときには、絵画にもまだ「説明役」が残っているようですね。
無論、今は適切なソフトと「構成要素写真」があれば、ケルブの合成写真を作ることはできます。
でも、構成要素写真が各種必要で、仔牛の足、アルブをまとった人、鳥の翼、ライオンとウシと人とワシの頭、などなど ・・・ そして、それらすべてを合法的に所有していないといけませんよ。

I’m working on a new pastel painting, and here is a “study” for it.
Well, the medium is felt-tip markers, not soft pastel, because this is a “study.”
After trying some studies with markers, I’ll work with soft pastel.
Some painters prefer going “alla prima” — finishing a painting at once, say, somewhere outdoors.
In outdoor sketching, needless to say, I go alla prima as well. Yet with my “serious works,”
I usually make some studies and then work on the “real painting.”

パステルの新作に取り組んでおりまして、その「習作」です。
ご覧のように画材がパステルではなく、マーカーなのですが、これはまだ「習作」であるためです。
マーカーでの習作をいくつか作り、その後でパステルでの「本番」を始めます。
「アラ プリマ」を好む画家さんたちも、いらっしゃいます。つまり、たとえば屋外で一度に完成させるわけですね。
無論私も、屋外でのスケッチのときは、結果的にアラ プリマになります。
でも、スケッチじゃなくて「作品」の場合には、私は習作を作って、それから「本番」を始めることが多いです。
