20-min croquis — I hope her feet will remain OK in the years to come / 20分クロッキー ・・ モデルさんの足が、今後もOKであることを願うのですが

On November 17, I joined a croquis session. As usual, 20 minutes x 6 poses.

Here is one from the six. When she was seated, her face looked down, to
create some ennui mood, which I tried to depict in the 20 minutes of
this one. I loved the atmosphere she created.

Now, when she was posing on foot, her body often swang, failing to
stay still. I wondered why, and maybe the problem was with her feet.
Just look at her feet in this croquis, and you can easily tell she wears
slim heeled shoes very often. Notice the deforms in her toes.

I’m not a foot care specialist, so I cannot say anything with certainty
about her feet, but I do hope they’ll be OK for the rest of her life.

11月17日、クロッキー会に行ってきました。いつもどおり、20分 X 6ポーズです。

その6ポーズのうち、1つがこれ。このモデルさん、すわりポーズでは顔が
下を向くので、何かアンニュイなムードを漂わせてらっしゃり、
それを私は20分で描こうと努めました。その雰囲気が、私は好きだったのです

で、立ちポーズになると、このモデルさん、体がよく動いてしまいました。
何が原因なのか？ことによると、両足に問題があったのかも。
このクロッキーで彼女の足をご覧いただきたいのですが、足先の
変形がすぐに分かると思います。細いハイヒールか何かを、頻繁に履いて
らっしゃるように見受けます。

私はフットケアの専門家ではないので、足の問題について
何も確かなことは申せません。ただ、今後も末永く彼女の足が
健康であることを、願っています。

So, here is Stage 3.

When I was at the site, there was a swarm of red dragonflies
strolling around in the atmosphere

Known as “Sympetrum frequens” (autumn darters),
those insects are quite common in Japan.
They eat mosquitos, and so have been appreciated
by many. In some parts of Japan, there even are some age-old
prohibitions here, “Don’t catch dragonflies!”

You see, the images and treatments of dragonflies here
are drastically different from those of the West.

この現場にいた時、赤とんぼの群れが天空を飛び回っていました。

日本では見慣れたトンボですが、西側世界ではトンボに対する
イメージが日本とはかなり異なります。
それで、上の英語では「日本におけるトンボのイメージ」を
短く説明してあります。

Below on November 2, I showed Stage 1 of this painting.
Here is Stage 2 of it.

As you see, the painting has a vast field of grass.
The actual sight has many houses around the high-voltage towers —
as you can easily imagine if you are living in a major city.
In this painting, I erased all such houses, to create a
“horizon to infinity.”

今日は、ステージ２．

ご覧のとおり、本作では広い草原を描いています。
実際の現場では、鉄塔の周囲に家屋が多数ございます。
主要都市にお住いの方々なら、容易に想像できることでしょう。
本絵画では、そうした家屋をすべて消しました。
「無限への水平線」を作りたかったのですね。

I’ve hurried up with this. Now it’s done. And
I meant it to be cranky and junkie — because
it depicts Japan’s society following the Fukushima Daiichi
meltdown which began in 2011.

There seems to be no way out of it (victims are running inside
the pipes), yet there must be a way out, as suggested in the
lower right corner — every human-made system WILL
collapse one way or another!

本作品は、ピッチを上げて完成させました。
意図的に、ガラクタでおんぼろな感じに仕上げました。
なぜか？2011年に始まった福島第一原発のメルトダウン
以降の日本社会を描いたものだからです。

その社会システムから、出口はないように見えます。（被害者たちは、
パイプの中を走り回っています）
でも実際は、どこかに出口があるはず。人間の作ったシステムで、
崩壊していかないものなんて、ないわけですから。

There’s a little hill in my neighborhood, where I can enjoy
westward views from a small field of grass.
Some of you might say, “Huh, that’s nothing special”,
but such a hill is a rarity in overcrowded central Tokyo.

I made a quick sketch of sight from that li’l hill.
There, a small swarm of dragonflies was patrolling the sky and some
hit my sketchbook.
Then I began this painting of pointillism with felt-tip markers.

私の近所に小さな丘があって、小さな草原から
西の光景を眺めることができます。
まあ、「そんなの、どうってことないじゃん」と
思われる方もいらっしゃるでしょうけど、過密な
東京23区内では貴重な場所なんです。

その小さな丘で、ザッとスケッチをしました。
そのとき、トンボの群れが空をパトロールしていて、何匹かの
トンボが私のスケッチブックに接触しました。
それからマーカー点描で、この作品を描き始めました。

I showed the sketch for this new work below on Oct. 13, and the priming on Oct. 27.
Now, I’ve begun the painting, in color pencil and oil pastel.
Here is the beginning.

As I said earlier, this protest painting depicts the Japanese society
after the Fukushima Daiichi meltdown, which began on March 11, 2011.
I’ve been feeling like I’m struggling within a pandemonium society,
where people run around to escape it, but there seems to be
no way out. Meanwhile, some forces are struggling to restart
the nation’s existing nuclear plants —-

And that whole social system seems, at least to me, to be
extremely cranky and junkie!
So, this painting too must be cranky and junkie.

この新しい作品のためのスケッチは下の10月13日に、地塗りは10月27日に、
それぞれ紹介しました。
で、描き始めの状態を本日紹介します。オイルパステルと色鉛筆。

以前申しましたように、これはプロテスト絵画で、2011年3月11日に始まった
福島第一原発のメルトダウン以降の日本社会を描いたものです。
私自身が、伏魔殿の中で脱出しようと モガイテいるように感じています。
人々も走り回っているのですが、出口がないように見受けられます。
その間、ある種の人たちは国内の既存原発を再稼働させようと躍起です。

少なくても私の眼には、その社会システム全体がきわめてポンコツで
中毒症に陥ったものに見えます。
ですから、この絵画も「ポンコツ」な感じにしないと。
