So, this wax pastel (crayon) painting is done!

As I said before, wax pastel produces very subtle color hues, which are
hard to reproduce with a camera or a scanner.
So, here I first present two scanned images above (click to enlarge),
and below I show you a “whole picture” photo. As often, more lighting was needed
when I photographed the work, but I do not have a powerful lighting instrument.

このワックスパステル（クレヨン）絵画、完成です！

以前にも申し上げましたが、ワックスパステルは大変微妙な色合いを
生んでくれるので、スキャナーだけでもカメラだけでも再現が難しいです。
そこでここでは、まず上の2画像（クリックすれば、拡大します）で
スキャンしたものを示します。
そして下の画像は、全体を収めた写真です。例によって、もっと強力なライトが必要
なのですが、そうしたライトを私が持っておりません！

In painting, as in many other disciplines as well, one often has to try a new idea
in reality to find out if it really works.
This time, I want to create another portrait of St. Francis of Assisi, again
inspired by Alexej von Jawlensky. Yet this time, I wanted to try a method new to me —
— oil pastel on tempera.

So, I made tempera underpaint, shown left above (click to enlarge), and then
worked on it with oil pastel.
Alas, the result was not what I expected. Oil pastel does not apply well onto
smooth tempera surface. (right above)   < “(>_< ;;)
So, I changed the plan and now I’m going to work in oil — very traditional
“oil on tempera.”

So, changed the plan to work in oil on the tempera.

絵画でも、他の多くの専門分野と同様、何か新たなアイデアが本当に功を奏して
くれるのかどうかは、実際にやってみるしかない場合がよくあります。
今回私は、アシジの聖フランシスのポートレートをもう1つ創作したいのです。やはり、
アレクセイ フォン ヤウレンスキーからのインスピレーションで。
ただし、今回は新しい実験をしてみたかったのです。テンペラの上にオイルパステル
という描法を。

そこで、上の左側にあるテンペラの下絵を作り、その上にオイルパステルで描いてみました。
ありゃりゃ、結果は芳しくありませんね。（上の右側、クリックすれば拡大します）
どうも、滑らかなテンペラの表面には、オイルパステルがうまく付着しないのですよ。
そこで計画を変更、油彩で先に進むことにしました。大変伝統的な
「テンペラと油彩の混合技法」ですね。

結果、オイルパステルが滑らかなテンペラ表面に付着しないことを発見しました。
そこで、やり方を変更、ここから先は油彩で描くことにしました。

Again, you might not see much difference from Stage 2 shown below on July 31.
Yet please notice the differences in subtle colors — wax pastel (crayon) is
often wrongly considered to be “kindergarten medium,” but it actually
produces very subtle, graceful colors on paper. That’s why I use it.

やはり、下の7月31日のステージ2から、あまり変わっていないように見えるかも。
でも、微妙な色合いの違いを見つけてくだされば。
ワックスパステル(クレヨン)は、どうも「幼稚園の画材」と見なされやすいの
ですが、実は紙の上に実に微妙で美しい色合いを創り出してくれます。
だから私は、ワックスパステルを好んで使っているのですね。

もうすぐ、完成です。

20-min croquis, experimental / 20分クロッキー、実験スタイル

I joined another croquis (quick drawing) session on July 28.
As usual, 20 minutes x 6 poses.
I tried a “common” style, as shown below, for the first three poses.
Then, I noticed the model was not used to modeling and striving hard to
keep her body in the same posture. I could even share her pain.

Art modeling is not an easy job to do, you see.
It’s not just “getting naked before the artists and remain static.”
Keeping your body in precisely the same posture is way harder to do
than you imagine.

I wanted to speak to the floor manager and ask him to
tell the model to take easier poses — at a nude croquis session, it is
usually prohibited for an artist to talk directly with the model.
Alas, the floor manager was gone during the break!

So, for the last three poses, I changed my direction and tried
an experimental style, as you see above.
I hope you find it interesting.

7月28日にも、クロッキー会（速写画会）に行ってきました。
いつもどおり、20分 x 6ポーズです。
最初の３ポーズは、下にあるような「ありふれた様式」で描いてみました。
すると、モデルさんが不慣れな方で、自分の身体を同じ姿勢に保つため、
かなり苦労してらっしゃいました。描きながら、私にも苦しさが伝わってきたのですね。

アート モデルというのは、容易な仕事ではないのですね。
単に「人前で裸体になって、じっとしていればよい」わけじゃ、ないんです。
自分の身体を正確に同じ姿勢に保つというのは、想像を超えてつらい行為なのですね。

そこで私は、フロアーマネジャーに話して、モデルさんにもっと楽なポーズを選んで
もらうようお願いしたら？ と交渉したかった ・・・ ヌード クロッキー会ではたいてい、
アーティストがモデルさんに直接話しかけるのは、禁じられているので ・・・ のですが、
休憩時間になると、マネジャーがどっかに消えていました！

しかたありません。後半の3ポーズでは、描き方の方向を変更して、
もっと実験的なスタイルを試すことにしました。
それを、上に紹介しています。
面白いと、感じていただけると嬉しいです。

I think I can now call this Jawlensky-inspired painting.

I love paintings that invite the viewer into meditation. I sure hope this one is one of them.

Note: This soft pastel painting is very hard to photograph — my camera cannot
capture its colors correctly, no matter how I throw light on it.
So, here I show a photo and a scanned image, which covers most but not the whole of the picture.

This painting, inspired by Vincenzo Bellini’s famous
“Casta Diva”. is in progress.

In the opera’s setting, it is an aria sung by Druid priestess
and a prayer for peace.

Here I have present the three images — the painting is
larger than my scanner, so two scanned images.
To show the “whole picture,” shown below is a photo of the whole,
but I needed stronger light on it. I’d appreciate your understanding.

ヴィンセンツォ ベリーニの有名な Casta Diva というアリアにインスパイアーされた
この絵画、制作進行中です。

このオペラの設定では、このアリアはドゥルイドの女性祭司が歌うもので、
平和を求める祈りですね。
