というわけで、下の真っ白くて薄いTシャツを何色かの薄い色で染めてみました。首穴の左側はワーム グレイのように写真では見えますが、実は薄いピンクです。私のカメラが、色を忠実にとらえられなかったのですね。

さらに下の写真で、大量の水をスプレーしました。結果、こういう淡い色でも、「いやな露出」を軽減できることが確認できました。

写真の中央より少し下、木の色の箇所があります。実はこれ、この箇所を作るために指で抑えて作ったものです。スプレーだけでは、これは現れなかったのですね。私は、これは奇妙に思いました。（この箇所がないと、この写真全体がなんやら”魔法”のように見えてしまうかも。奇妙なので、指でワザワザ押さえて、この木の色の箇所が見えるようにしたのです）　で、この木の色の箇所も、↓ の「純白状態」での同様の箇所に比べ、木の色がボヤケテいますね。

結論として、薄い色でも「こまったスケスケ」を軽減できることがわかりました。しかも、薄い色なら、「炎天下の黒いTシャツ」ほどには「暑さに身を焼かれそうになる」ことはありません。

A certain client has asked me to make a choker featuring a heart pendant of shells, some pearls, and amethyst and aqua marine, plus some seed beads. So, I visited some specialist stores in my neighborhood today and got these:

The amethyst and aqua marine, though they seem “completely opaque” in the photo, are actually a bit translucent and shows their insides — really beautiful!

あるお客様からのご注文で、貝殻のハートのペンダントをフィーチャーしたチョーカーを作ることになりました。そのハート以外に、パールやアメジスト、アクアマリンを使います。そこで、近所の専門店に行って、上ののパーツや石を買ってきたのです。
アメジストとアクアマリンは、写真ではまったく不透明に見えますが、実物はいくらか内部が見え、実にきれいですよ。

So, I dyed the thin white T-shirt in some pale colors.  Please note that the portion to your left of the collar is actually dyed in pale pink, though it seems like some subtle warm gray in the photo. My cranky camera is not good enough —

Below, I sprayed and sprayed — see that even such a very weak color can alleviate the “exposure”!
The wood-colored portion  below the center of the photo — believe me, I I intentionally pressed this portion onto the hand model inside, to make it emerge. After the spraying, this portion did not emerge, and I thought that was strange. (Without this portion, the whole picture looked like a magic. I wanted an “honest” photo. So, I pressed the portion with a finger.)  And as you see, even in this portion, the wooden color is vaguer than in the photo of a similar portion in the “pure white” below.

In short, even weak colors can alleviate “unwanted exposure.” Dyeing in weak colors can help, while letting you avoid that “scorching in a black T-shirt”.

ところが、　ハンド君のいる場所が雨に見舞われたら～？

↓ スプレーで水をかけてみると、やれやれ、薄くて白いTシャツでは、木の肌がまともに透けて・・・

みなさん、これはイヤですよねえ！？ いや、若くて皮膚がきれいな男女なら、「セクシーでいい」のかも。でも、私も含め高齢の人間にとっては、普段無視している背中や、お腹のたるんだ皮膚が現れるってえのは～～～ <“(>_< ;;)>
まるで裸でストリートを歩いているような・・・

雨でも、汗でも～～

「ブラックとかインディゴのTシャツにすれば?｣
確かにそうすれば、大汗かいても、雨に打たれても、老醜をさらすことはありませんが～～ LAとか東京とかにお住まいの方々はよくお分かりのように 、カンカン照りの下でブラックTシャツって、汗まみれになってしまう。。。

そこで、問題の薄いホワイトTシャツを薄い色で染めると、どの程度の「隠蔽効果」があるのか、それを探る実験なのですね。(続く)

Alas, the hand has arrived in a
warm region of the planet, where there often take place the thing called “rains”!

model’s wooden skin emerges,
now almost bare —

Friends, this is so embarrassing —

After spraying -- the wooden skin comes visible, almost naked!!

no matter what comes visible is
your disregarded back, under-
developed chest, or lovely flabby
belly! If you are “young and sexy,”
this might not be very bad, yet
for old men and women like
myself, being soaked with
precipitation — whether it is from
heavens or from your own body
(sweat) — can make you feel like
you are running down the street
naked!    \”(>O < ;;;)”’/  Oh, no!

Still, if you’re living in places like LA, Tokyo, etc., you know a “dark-colored” T-shirt can turn you into a “stinky animal” by the time you get back home under the scorching sun and rush into the shower ~~~

So, seriously my friends, this experiment is to see how well dyes of pale colors on a thin white T-shirt can alleviate such “sprayed embarrassment” —

Dyeing clothes is not only for decorative fun.
I brought together these three  objects — a strange combination, but this is no “beautiful as the chance meeting on a dissecting-table of a sewing-machine and an umbrella.” Rather, I began a very practical experiment. You’ll see more on the following couple of days.

さて、ケッタイな3つの物体の組み合わせですね。なにも、「解剖台の上での、こうもり傘とミシンの偶然の出会いのように美しい」をやらかそうってんじゃ、ないんですよ。むしろ、大変現実的な狙いの実験です。これから2～3日、続けてお眼にかけましょう。

So, the “imprimatura” experiment is done. See how the back looks finally.
In short, the experiment has shown, as I expected, that dyeing on light-colored fabric makes the resulting colors somehow “gentle.”
I think this design is not bad at all — come this autumn, I will post this work again!

Imprimatura 実験の方も、完了しております。ウラ面の最終状態です。
短く言えば、予想通り、軽い色の付いた布地に染色すると、できる色が「やさしく」なりますね。
このデザインは悪くないと思うので、秋になったら再度紹介しますね。

シンボリズムというものは、いたずらに説明しない方が良いことが多いものです。ただ、ときに、若干の説明を加えておいたほうが良い場合もございます。
下の No Nukes + Peace ブラックTシャツの場合、
・ オモテでは、「星座の鳥」は1羽だけで、そのくわえるピース マークは、点線です。
・ ウラでは、「星座の鳥」が4羽集まり、ピース マークもラメ入りゴールドの実線になっています。
このクライアントのご要望は、「核の廃絶と平和を求める祈り」でございました。。
これ以上の説明は、不要でしょう～

Well, usually I don’t like explaining symbolism — better it’s left to contemplation and imagination!
Still, sometimes just a little explanation can help —
With the “No Nukes + Peace” black T-shirt below, on the front, the single “constellation bird” carries a  “peace symbol” of dotted lines.
On the back, four such birds get together and the same symbol is now in continuous lines of glittering gold.
The client wanted to carry his “prayers for peace and freedom from  nukes” in this T-shirt.
Now, I leave the rest up to each of you ~~

So, the back side is done. Again, my cranky camera created the ghostly shades of green over some parts, yet in reality they are non-existent — the shirt is of solid black. Also, the poor camera is unable to capture the glitters — the “peace symbol” is in glittering gold and “No Nukes” in glittering silver, actually!

ウラ面です。やはり、私のボロ カメラは存在しないグリーンの陰を、作り出してしまいました。おまけに、ゴールドとシルバーのラメも写せませんね。実際には、ピースマークがラメ入りのゴールド、No Nukesがラメ入りのシルバーなのです。
