So, I often paint many forms of darkness we humans create, hoping to find some “light out of there”. Often, such an artistic attitude leads me into “art activisim” or something close to it.
そこで私は、我々人間が作り出す暗闇を描くことがあります。「そこから脱出する光」をなんとか見たいからですね。そうした姿勢は、いわゆる「アート アクティビズム」のようなものに近づくケースが、少なくありません。

The “flag” below, titled “A National Flag,” was a scandal when I exhibited it along with three other works on war back in 1989, at a gallery in Tokyo. I thought, honestly, some people were reluctant to see light. I still do.
下の「旗」は、”A National Flag”  (国旗) というタイトルの作品です。1989年、これを東京の某ギャラリーで、他の戦争に関する作品3点と併せて展示したとき、いくらか騒ぎになりました。そのとき、正直に言ってしまうと私は、世の中には光を見たがらない人もいるのだと思いました。今でも、そう思います。

I have to get two rush writing jobs by the end of this month (April), and I have to slow down the making of my new works until then.
So, during the rest of this month, I will occasionally post some of my old paintings — accompanied by some quotes I love from Meister Eckhart, to describe my stance in painting.

この4月の残りの間、大変急ぎのライティング仕事を2件並行して進めねばならなくなりました。そのため、新しい作品の制作はスローダウンします。
そこで今月の残る期間には、マイスター エックハルトのものとされる言葉から私の好きなものを紹介し、私の昔の絵画と合わせて投稿しますね。私の絵描きとしてのスタンスを提示するために。

The same cylinder — it has a lot of color beads in it, yet it is hard for my camera to capture them! So, I hung it right onto a light source, in this photo. I hope now you see there are a lot inside.

This cylinder is to be the centerpiece of a new choker. I am working on a few other “components” — which I will show you here, in several days to come.

下の、同じ円柱です。中にカラービーズが入っていると申しましたが、どうも私のカメラではうまく撮影できません。そこで、光源に直接吊るしてみました。これで、中にカラービーズがたくさん入っているのが、お分かりになりますでしょうか？

この円柱は、新しいチョーカーのセンターに来ます。他の「コンポーネント」も少しあって、目下作成中です。今後何日か、順次ここで公開してまいります。

— so, the cylinder is now filled up with color beads, with another “lid” applied to it.  See how it looks like.
… というわけで、円柱の中がカラービーズで一杯になりました。その上で、もう1つの「ふた」も取り付けました。こんな感じになっています。

For a closer look at it — yet again my camera is not good enough for such a close shot. So, the photo below is blurred.
もっと接近したところ … ただ、私のボロ カメラでは、ここまでの接写ができません。そのため、写真がボヤけております。

I need a better camera !

So, what am I gonna do with the empty cylinder below??  Filling it in with larger beads of different colors — as you see, this is how it looks, when it is half filled up.
では、下の空洞の円柱で何をするのか？？ 中に、各色のもう少し大きいビーズを入れていくのです。下の写真は、ご覧のように、半分詰まった状態。

OK, a closer shot is needed — yet my camera is not good enough for a very close-up shot. The result is blurred, as you see. Sorry. Yet I suppose you see my intention now —
ううん、もっと近づいて撮影する必要がありますね。でも、私のカメラはボロで、あまり接写ができないのです。結果は、ご覧のようにボヤケています。申し訳ないですが～～　でも、私の意図はお分かりいただけるでしょう。

So, the enigmatic rectangle of beads shown in my post April 13th below is done —
下の4月13日の写真にある、ビーズを編んだ長方形、完成しました。

でも、こんな長方形で、いったい何を作るんでしょう？次をご覧くださいな。

Not a gene-modified sweet corn —

(;;; ^O^)  A genetically-modified sweet corn???  NO, the rectangle turned into a cylinder!!  The inside is empty.
遺伝子操作して透明になったトウモロコシ・・・ では、ありません！ 上の長方形を円柱にしたのです。内部は空洞です。

Then, I add a “lid” of a larger transparent bead on one end of the cylinder. This
photo shot was too close for my poor camera to capture clearly. So, the photo image is blurred, yet I hope you notice the “lid.”
そして、もう少し大きなビーズで円柱の片方に「ふた」をします。
あまりにクロースアップなので、私のカメラでは鮮明にはとらえられません。そのため、写真がぼやけていますが、「ふた」が分かりますでしょうか。

This painting itself is not for sale. It’s my prayer in painting for all those persecuted, oppressed, etc. How can a prayer ever be exchanged for money??

So, this is in a way a pastel version of “Weeping Face,” made to a poem written by a friend of mine, titled “Woeful Days.”  This means this version is “illustrative,” so it is “lighter” than the oil-on-paper version, yet this pastel version shares the same intention — a prayer for all those in grief, persecution, oppression, etc.
The oil version will soon be done as well.

こちらは、Weeping Face のパステル バージョンとも言えるものですが、実は友人が書いた “Woeful Days” （嘆きの日々）という詩に合わせたイラストです。つまり、こちらは一種の「イラスト」であり、その分「ライト」（軽い／明るい）になっています。しかし意図は同じで、すべて嘆く人、弾圧されている人のための祈りのようなものです。
油彩バージョンのほうも、近く完成します。

here are more photos of the ball, taken at different angles. See how just a small difference in the angle creates all the different radiances of colors.
Now, I’m working on another “object” of the same kind (beaded object containing a few other beads inside). In several days, I’ll show you some photos of the “new object of the same kind” in the making. When all such objects are done, I’ll combine them into a “choker of ever-changing radiance.”

下のスワロスキービーズのボール、別の写真を。内部に緑と赤のビーズを入れたため、ちょっとした角度の違いで色のきらめきが変貌します。
現在、同じような（内部にビーズが入った、ビーズ製の）物体を作成中です。数日したら、その「新しい同種の物体」のメイキング写真も紹介しますね。そうした物体が全部できたら、「変貌を続けるきらめきのチョーカー」にします。
