Well, when I was working on the first oil layer of “Weeping Face” below, there was some oil paints left over. i applied them to another carton board, as the imprimatura of another painting.
With this one, I avoided gesso, since I found tempera resisted by this gesso I have, in “Weeping Face” earlier.
So, with this one, I applied the leftover oils directly on the paper.

別の絵画作品のインプリマトゥーラです。下のWeeping Faceの油彩第1層を描いていたとき、油絵の具が余りました。それを、別のイラストボードに塗ってインプリマトゥーラにしたわけです。
ここでは、ジェッソを塗っていません。Weeping Faceではジェッソを塗りましたが、どうもテンペラをはじくようでした。なので今度は、余った油絵の具を紙に直接塗りました。

Imprimatura of another painting, this time oils directly on paper

I’ve made it through the harsh deadlines, and am back to painting this Weeping Face.
Here, the first layer of oil. As you see, the “total mess” of tempera imprimatura is gone. Yet it certainly affects the colors of this oil layer, though it is hardly visible in photos. In the real thing, the imprimatura certainly affects the oil layer’s colors.This is what imprimatura is for!

無茶な納期の仕事、終わらせました。Weeping Faceの創作を再開しております。
これは、油絵の具の第一層。ご覧のとおり、インプリマトゥーラの「混沌」はもうありません。しかし、写真では見えないのですが、実物では確かにインプリマトゥーラのテンペラの色が、この油彩の層の色合いに影響しております。そうするための、インプリマトゥーラなのですね。

First oil layer

I’m freed from the bondage of the deadlines mentioned below, and will soon resume working on “Weeping Face.”
For now, here is the same model I drew with a ball-point pen below, with another pose, drawn with a different medium, pastel.
To depict “light,” a ball-point pen is certainly not the right medium. while pastel proves its might in that. On the other hand, pastel is such a gentle medium it is often not good in describing the “mess of modernity.’ There, ball-point pens can show how truly “modern” they are.

やっと無理な納期から解放されたので、”Weeping Face” の創作をすぐに再開できます。
今日のところは、下でボールペンで描いた同じモデルさんの、別のポーズ。こちらは、パステル。
「光」を表すには、確かにボールペンは不向きですね。パステルの出番です。逆に、「現代の混沌」を表すには、パステルはお上品すぎますね。そんなときにはボールペンを使ってみると、実に「近現代の用具」であることが分かりますよ。

I wish to proceed with the “Weeping Face” below, but temporarily some writing job deadlines are standing in my way. After i meet all those harsh deadlines, I will soon resume the painting.
So, for now, here is one from my old drawings I made with a tricolor ball-point pen.
Ball-point pens are not usually considered as a drawing tool, yet actually they can make some unique effects, depending on how you use them.

下の “Weeping Face”  を進めたいのですが、ライティングの仕事で大急ぎのものが入り、それをまず片付けないといけません。納期が急なのです。その納期を守ってから、すぐに”Weeping Face” を再開します。
そこで、今日のところは、私が以前に描いたボールペンのデッサンを１つ。
ボールペンは通常、描画用の材料とは見なされていませんが、実際には使い方次第で、面白い効果が得られます。

Don’t panic, my friends.
This is still ‘imprimatura’ of the painting i am currently working on, “Weeping Face.” This means it is supposed to be messy, in this stage!
In the coming days, I’ll apply many more thin layers of oil over this imprimatura, to ‘build up” the painting.

「なに、このグチャグチャ！？」
まだこれは、インプリマトゥーラなのです。グチャグチャで正解なのです。
これに何層も、油彩の薄い層を重ねていって、Weeping Faceという絵画を構築していくわけですね。

ははは、Imprimatura（有色地塗り）とは、私の場合には、こういうふうに多色をぐちゃぐちゃにするのです。ただ、完成状態の色の配置を想像しながらですが。Imprimatura自体は、完成作品では、見えなくなるのですが、色の深みを作るために必要なのですね。
まだしばらく、テンペラでImprimaturaを作っていきます。

Ha, ha, ha, this is the first layer of the “imprimatura” — in my case, I make a mess of many colors in imprimatura, though I do think of teh finished picture, especially its colors and color placements, as I make a “mess.” The layers of imprimatura are usually invisible in the finished painting, yet they actually create depth in colors.
For the time being, with this “Weeping Face,” I work on the imprimatura.

Imprimatura, layer 1

Hahaha, this is a carton (a carton used as a “support” of a painting, known as an “illustration board” in Japanese) “primed” with gesso (plaster). After the gesso dries up, I begin to paint some “imprimatura” with tempera.
Then, I’ll apply many very thin layers of oil — yes, I am turning the esquisse of “Weeping Face” below into a painting of tempera & oil on carton. This should take months!

ははは、これはジェッソという石膏で地塗りした、イラストレーションボードです。このジェッソが乾くと、テンペラで「インプリマトゥーラ」を塗っていきます。
そののち、薄い油彩の層を幾度も重ねていきます。はい、古典描法で、下のWeeping Faceのエスキースを作品にしようというわけです。何か月か、かかるでしょう！

This is still an esquisse yet — a weeping face. Thinking of turning it into a ‘classical’ painting of tempera and oil. An ‘esquisse,” a French word for “sketch,” refers to a preparatory drawing painting on which the final work is based.

まだエスキースです。これからテンペラと油彩の古典描法の作品にしようかと考えています。エスキースとはフランス語で、「下絵」というような意味です。

I’ve found out a very old photo of the first oil painting I made.
Note that some room lights are reflected in the upper right half.
Nothing much. I was just learning to work with oil paints back then. So, I set up some objects on a little table, and painted them in a very “descriptive” way.

私のはじめて描いた油彩画の、古い写真がありました。
部屋の照明が、右上部に映ってしまっているのにご注意。
特に申し上げることは、ありません。当時はとにかく、油彩で描くことを学んでいたので。とにかく、適当にオブジェを集めて小さなテーブルにセットアップ、「描写的に」描いただけです。
