On a plain chain

I’ve been thinking of a three-piece series oil pastel paintings based on my 20-minute croquis (quick drawings).
So far, I have posted two of them here, as shown just below.

Now, I’m heading for the third one, whose original pencil croquis is here —

Of course, it is rough and coarse — it should be — since it is an experiment with strokes of oil pastel.
You can pooh-pooh at this, if you’d like to. No matter you do so or not, I definitely need to experiment with oil pastel, a painting medium still terribly under-developed!

5月15日のクロッキー（速写画）会から、20分クロッキーをもう1つ ・・・
言うまでもなく、実に荒っぽいです。荒っぽくて当然で、これはオイルパステルの短い線による描画の実験なのですね。
バカになさりたければ、そうなさって構いません。どう思われようと、オイルパステルという画材の使い方は、あまりにも未発達なのです。だから、実験を重ねませんと。

Of course, it’s rough and coarse — an experiment with strokes!

Just another 20-min croquis (quick drawing) from May 15 — the model was tall and of a sturdy physical construction, for a Japanese young woman. You see, for a model like this, I use thicker, more “solid-fast” lines.

単純に、5月15日のクロッキー（速写画）会から、20分クロッキーをもう1つです。
このモデルさんは、日本の若い女性にしては長身でがっしりした体格の方でした。
ご覧のとおり、そういうモデルさんの場合には、太くしっかりした線を使います。

This is just something I made for fun, out of the Feb. 12 croquis I posted way below —
I usually do NOT work in a cubist style, and I sure hope some of you who work in a cubist style will try working with oil pastel!

As you know, oil pastel was first developed in 1921 then spread among some artists — which naturally means the heydays of cubism were already over when the medium was recognized by many painters. This explains why we do not see many cubist paintings in oil pastel.

So, if you paint in a cubist style and are interested in oil pastel, please try working with this particular medium and publish it somewhere!

こちらは単に面白半分で描いたもので、ずっと下の2月12日のクロッキーを基にしています。
私は普段、キュービスム風には描かないのですが、どなたかキュービスト風に描く方で、オイルパステルに関心のある方は、試してみてくださいな。

ご存じのとおり、オイルパステルが最初に開発されたのは1921年のこと。それから、一部の絵描きの間に広まっていきました。つまり、オイルパステルがある程度広まったころには、キュービスムの最盛期は終わっていたことになります。ですから当然、オイルパステルによるキュービスム風作品というのは、あまり見かけないわけですね。

ですから、キュービスト風に描く方で、オイルパステルに関心のある方がいらっしゃれば、ぜひお試しになって、どこかに発表してみてくださいな。

I’m experimenting with oil pastel, and if you are not reluctant to quick, coarse lines, oil pastel can be a nice medium to experiment with.

Here, coarse, wild vertical lines of oil pastel make the female model look like withstanding a terrible deluge —

今日もまた、20分 X 6ポーズのクロッキー（速写画）会がありました。
このところ私はオイルパステルでの実験をよくしているのですが、荒っぽい線が嫌でない方には、オイルパステルは実験に適した画材かもしれません。

ここでは、オイルパステルによる荒れた縦の線が、モデルさんがひどい豪雨に耐えているかのような効果を出しています。何かに使えるかも。

Needless to say, I don’t like showing such “coarse, quick memos“, yet below on May 7,
I said:
“I’m planning to make some paintings of cityscapes, so I’ve been making studies of
– people, especially their postures and meanings such postures can have —-”

So, just to prove I’m doing precisely that, here are a few of the coarse, quick “memos” I’ve made — you see, I’m studying people postures, both clothed and naked.
I’ll make a lot more of such memos and create some cityscapes — though it takes some time.

Please note that even in 2/3-minute quick sketches like shown below, human postures suggest some meanings!

そりゃまあ、こんなクイック メモはあまり人前にさらすもんじゃあ、ござんせん。
ただ、下で5月7日に、こう申し上げました。
「都市風景の絵画を創作するつもりで準備をアレコレしております。そこで、次の2種類の練習をしているのですね。
・ 人物像。特に、その身動きと身動きが持ちえる意味 ・・・・」

それを証明するためだけに、ザザッと描いた「メモ」をアップしてみます。お分かりのとおり、着衣か裸体かを問わず、人の姿勢を研究しているわけですね。
こうしたメモをさらに描いて、少し時間はかかりますが、都市風景を作ろうとしているのです。

こうした、わずか2~3分で描くメモであっても、人の姿勢とは何かを物語るものであることに、ご注意くださいな。
