With all the moisture from the rainy season, Tokyo’s H temp reached 36C (96.8F) — you know, this 96.8F is a lot worse than 104F (40C) of ever-dry Los Angeles!!!
Many here are agonized by sleepless nights.
So, here’s an old sketch I made before, wishing all of you a good night sleep —

Rush writing jobs keep coming in to me, while the “clinging dampness” of Tokyo’s atmosphere is punishing me — in a way, I’m sick yet at work —
So, I might need several days before I make my next post. Until them, here’s a drawing I made years ago, of a model who was an athlete.
Her “looking beyond” makes the viewers think of “something beyond.”
東京はまとわりつく湿気で、体がまいっています。そこに、ライティングの仕事が休みなく入り続けております～～ ようするに、体調は悪いけど、仕事は休めない状態です。
そのため、次の投稿をするまでに、数日経過するかもしれません。その間、以前描いた裸婦デッサンをあげておきますね。このモデルさんは、何かの運動選手だったようです。
モデルさんが「彼方を見つめて」くれていたので、このデッサンを見る人も「彼方の何か」を想像できますね。

I know some people are not convinced common ball-point pens are usable in drawing as well. So, here’s another croquis (quick sketch) made only with a common ball-point pen, on a scratch pad.

ボールペンのクロッキー（速写画）を1枚だけ見せても、ありふれたボールペンを画材に使えるとは納得してくれない方々が、いらっしゃるでしょう。そこで、もう1枚。落書き（メモ）帳に、ありふれたボールペン1本だけです。

An unusual church building, I have to say!
When I go out for, say, a meeting and I don’t think I have time to make a sketch on the way — that’s when I go out without my usual sketchbook and pencils.
Alas, on my way back, I come across a scene I want to make a quick drawing of — and the sun is setting down soon.
In a case like this, I just make a quick sketch with a ball-point pen, on a scratch pad.
It’s just an ordinary ball-point pen, the kind you can get at any convenience store. Still, you can make sketches with it, as you see —
As long as “the thing” can leave some “set stains” of at least a color on, say, paper, you might be able to use it as a drawing / painting medium.

たとえばミーティングに出かけて、スケッチをしている時間はないだろうと思った ― そんなとき、いつものスケッチブックと鉛筆を持たずに出かける場合があります。
ありゃま、そんな帰り道、スケッチしたいシーンがあった。しかも、日はもうすぐ沈む。
そんなとき私は、ボールペンとメモ用紙にクロッキー（速写画）を描いておきます。
何の変哲もないボールペンです。その辺のコンビニにあるような。それでも、それなりのスケッチには使えますよ、ご覧のとおり。
その「何か」がたとえば紙の上に、少なくても1つの色の「しみ」を残してくれる限り、その「何か」は、画材として使えるかもしれないのです。

Below, I posted some croquis of “life forms in time/space looking beyond” — probably, for some transformations.
Here is another — unknown life forms in green, being transformed by and into light.
Actually, I intended to try another transformation, in this painting — a transformation of a painting medium, a sort of oil pastel named “Crepus.” It’s been long used at kindergartens, and many consider it “just for li’l kids.”
Yet when I tried Crepus, I found it a good oil pastel an artist can seriously work with. So, I intended to “transform” Crepus into a serious painting medium. This painting I made with Crepus alone, on oil canvas.

下で、「時空のかなたを見つめる生命体」という視点でのクロッキーを紹介しました。おそらく、何らかのトランスフォーメーション（変貌）を待ち望んで。
そしてもう１つ。ここでは、未知の緑色の生命体が、光によって、光へと変貌しています。
実は、この作品ではもう1つのトランスフォーメーションも意図していました。「クレパス」という画材の変貌です。どうもクレパスというと、長年幼稚園などで使われてきたため、小さい子供の画材と思われています。
実際に使ってみると、要するにオイルパステルでして、アーティストが真剣に使える画材です。そこで、クレパスをアーティスト用画材にトランスフォームさせようと思いました。これは、油彩用カンバスにクレパスだけで描いたものです。

“Crepus” should be taken more seriously —
Below, on June 26, with some courage, I posted a clumsy 15-min croquis, from the late 1980s, of a nude model, depicted as a “life form in time/space looking beyond” — a “perspective” I already had back then.
Now, to present a human model in this direction, the model has no need to be naked. (This perspective works both ways.) Here is a full-color pastel sketch of a Scandinavian model. I made it in an hour or so, back in the early 1990s.
It was funny that the other artists chose positions roughly in front of the model — there was some empty space behind her. So, I chose to draw from behind. Probably, they and I had radically different “perspectives” in drawing/painting —-
下で6月26日、80年代終わりに描いたガチガチの15分クロッキーを「あえて」紹介しました。「時空の中に置かれて、彼方を見つめている生命体」という視点が、当時の私にすでにあったということを、見せたかったのです。
そうした視点で人体を描くのに、モデルさんがヌードである必要はありません。（どちらでも、この視点は有効です） 下は、パステルでのカラースケッチで、スカンディナビアからのモデルさんを描いたもの。1時間ほどのスケッチで、1990年代前半のものです。
会場にいた私以外の絵描きさんたちは、モデルの前方の位置を選んでいました。モデルさんの背後には空白のスペースができていたので、私はそこの床に座ったわけです。おそらく、私と他のアーティストたちでは、perspective （視点、透視法） が基本的に違っていたのでしょうね。

2014年3月の投稿までさかのぼっていただくのは大変なので、ここにもう一度写真を1つあげておきますね。これが、冬用「Cathedra」でした。

Now, I’m working on a summer version of it — with a collared shirt. Why collared? You see, with a T-shirt, I can end up with something similar to the winter version. I hope to try something new. Also, button-down white shirts usually carry some “office” air — now I’m trying to turn one into something street-casual.
Some more layers of dye are needed —
で、現在、Cathedraの夏バージョンを作成中です。コラーのあるシャツを選びました。なぜか？お分かりのように、Tシャツに染めると、冬用バージョンと似たものになってしまいます。それと、だいたいボタンダウンの白いシャツというのは、どこか「オフィスの雰囲気」があるもの。そこで、それをどうやって、ストリートカジュアルに変えるか？課題として、やってみたいのですね。
これからもっと、染料を重ねていきますよ。

通常なら、15分で描いたクロッキー（速写画）など、人前に曝すものではありません。
下にあるクロッキーも、例外ではありません。どなたでも、線が不器用でガチガチなのにお気づきになるでしょう。それもそのはず、1980年代後半に、私がデッサンなどを学び始めたときの速写画なのですから。
当時すでに、私にはLGBTの方々が知人にいて、彼らから私は「性別」というものが「二進法的」つまり「AかBか、どちらか１つだけ」というものではないことを、学びました。言い換えれば、生命というものには、人間のカテゴリー化や理解を超えた多様性のあることを。.
この認識が、この絵を学び始めたばかりのガチガチの線を描いていたころにも、すでに作用していました。「時空の中にあって、その向こうを見ている生命体」（特に、モデルさんの眼をご覧くださいな）という（いうなれば）「透視法」です。
この奇妙な「透視法」は、今では私には馴染んだ「透視法」になっています。もっとも、それが「1点透視」なのか、「4点」（3つの次元プラス時間）なのか、私にもわからないのですが。
そして。裸の女性を femme fatale として描くというのは、ジェンダー主義の生み出した「トンカチ頭」（cliche）の1つでしょう。人体を生命体として描くことで、確かに、ヒトの裸体をジェンダーから解放する視点が得られます。ただ、その結果は、一部の人たちには、「清潔すぎる」と見えるようですね。

Usually, a 15-minute croquis (quick drawing) is not meant for public display.
The one below is no exception. Anyone can notice its rigid, clumsy lines — I made this croquis soon I after I began taking drawing lessons, back in the late 1980s.
Now, back then, I already had some LGBT acquaintances around me, from whom I learned that “sex” is not simply “binary” — it’s not flip-flop. In other words, life takes diversities beyond human categorization / comprehension.
And this perception was already at work in me as I made these rigid, cranky lines. “A life form placed in time/space, looking beyond.” (Notice, especially, the eyes of the model.)
This “perspective” — a life form in time/space looking beyond — has by now become a “perspective” I have acquired, even though I do not know whether it is “1-point” or “4-point” (3Ds plus time).
Also, painting a naked woman as femme fatale has long been one of the cliches produced by genderism. Painting a human body as a life form can certainly de-gender naked bodies. The results of this de-gendering can seem to be “goodie clean” to some.
